Join us and play a vital role in maintaining high standards across our healthcare environment, ensuring optimal performance and safety for all of our patients, visitors and staff.
As a Junior Estates Officer at the Royal United Hospitals Bath, you will work closely with the Estates Officers ensuring that our trade staff carry out planned and reactive activity in a timely manner, meeting both high-performance standards and compliance requirements.
You will also assist in managing contractors engaged in estates related tasks. Your expertise will be essential in managing backlog maintenance, planned maintenance programmes, and asset registers.
Additionally, you will play a key role in inspecting planned and reactive maintenance works to continuously improve standards of work and meet the service level agreement targets, whilst building strong working relationships within the organisation.
This role presents an exciting opportunity to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and leadership behaviours to progress onto a Estates Officer role in the future.
Main duties of the job
This role involves providing local support for operational services, focusing on monitoring statutory compliance, ensuring safe work practices, and facilitating minor capital works. The officer will also assist in managing contractors engaged in estates related tasks.
- Implement and monitor safe work practices for all estates and facilities contractors
- Ensure statutory compliance throughout the Trust
- Coordinate works with contractors and in-house staff to ensure timely completion of planned and reactive activities
- Monitor and improve performance in accordance to the existing service level agreement
- Inspect planned and reactive maintenance works to uphold quality standards and compliance

Qualifications & training
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of a full range of trade procedures acquired through a 4 year accredited training course, level 3 vocational qualification or equivalent plus relevant or equivalent experience
- Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in a hospital environment or similar
- Educated to degree level in a related discipline or equivalent qualification and experience
- Project management qualification
- Recognised Health and safety qualification
Specific skills
Essential criteria
- Confident communicator, capable of liaising at a technical level with external consultants and non-technical internal clients/customers
- Ability to lead and positively negotiate with and influence others
- Change management skills
- Highly organised and ability to prioritise tasks
- Able to accommodate frequent interruptions/disruption and recover concentration
- Able to work independently and exercise a high degree of professional judgement
- Willingness to develop additional skills to assist the Trust.
Desirable criteria
- Ability to carry out inspections and testing of various estates related systems, e.g. Water, electrical, ventilation, medical gases, etc
Knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Understanding of estates functions within a healthcare environment
- Experience of reviewing and updating Trust policy and procedure documentation, including safe systems of work
- Knowledge of risk management including reviewing contractor risk assessment and method statements
- Understanding of confidentiality and Information Governance
- Computer literate and fluent with all Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of completing estates related projects within a healthcare environment
- Experience of working in a hospital environment or similar
- Competent person status for various estates related functions, e.g. Water, electrical, ventilation, medical gases, etc.
- Knowledgeable of improvement methodology: lean, 6 sigma, improving together
