JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and forward thinking Consultant Psychiatrist, or Consultant Psychologist, Consultant Nurse, Consultant Social worker or Consultant Occupational Therapist, who is also a Mental Health Act Approved Clinician and have completed training or have gained experience working within a Forensic Mental Health Service to join our clinical team in Ash ward.

Established in 2010 Ash Ward is a 12-bed stand-alone male Low Secure in-patient Ward. All patients are detained under MHA with some also under MOJ restrictions. Ash ward is currently based in Broadway Park, Broadway House, Ash Ward, Broadway Health Park, Barclay St, Bridgwater TA6 5LX.

All admissions are planned, with all referrals made through the Cambio system and referrals of Somerset patient’s are access assessed by our leadership team. For any admissions assessed by our collaborative partners, an admission assessment is completed prior to admission.

Ash Ward is part of Somerset Foundation NHS Foundation Trust Forensic Services providing support for those in Somerset who experience mental health difficulties and are in contact with the criminal justice system or who present with significant risks to others. This developing service comprises a number of teams including:

Main duties of the job

• A Community Forensic Team – providing Forensic advice and support to community mental health services and non secure inpatient settings.

• A Specialist Community Mental Health Team (SCFT) who hold responsibility for Gatekeeping / admission avoidance into secure care and provide key working for patients within secure care setting across the South West Provider collaborative region.

 

Somerset Foundation Trust Forensic Services also provide the following:

• A Liaison and Diversion Service within police Custody, locally named ASCC - (Advice and Support in Custody and Court )

• An OPD (Offender Personality disorder) Pathway in conjunction with probation services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Our mission is to provide a safe and empowering environment for both our patients and colleagues. The main function of the job is to provide senior clinical leadership and support and model our Trust values (see below) whilst acting as a Mental Health Act Approved / Responsible Clinician Mental Health Act (1983 as amended) within our low secure forensic in-patient service. The successful post holder will be working closely and interface with all other sides of our developing forensic services and support its development and expansion. Ash ward is co-located with our Community and Specialist Forensic Services allowing for collaboration between services and continuity of care for our patients.

Somerset has a population of approximately 560,500 residents It is a relatively ethnically non-diverse part of the UK with 95% of residents being of white British ethic origin. There are no cities or major urban centres. It is predominantly rural and has large areas of socio-economic deprivation e.g. West Somerset.

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has resulted from the merger of the former Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SomPar), the Mental Health Trust in the area, with Taunton & Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (TST), and Yeovil District Hospital. The merger was the first of this in the country. The postholder will be able to participate in the development of the merged Trust and help bring to fruition the benefits to our mental health patients the merger will provide.
