Job overview

An opening has arisen for a full time maternity cover Senior Band 7 Learning Disabilities Nurse to join the CAMHS Learning Disability team in Bristol.

CAMHS LD work with children up to 18 years old who have a Moderate to Severe Learning Disability and who experience a range of mental health needs and challenging behaviour.

The successful applicant will join a small established, and friendly multidisciplinary team consisting of Psychiatry, Psychology, Nursing and Support Workers.

The post holder will provide specialist clinical assessment, formulation and treatment to young people and their families, specialist schools and the wider network.

The successful candidate will have an interest and experience in working with children and families with moderate to severe LD.

Main duties of the job

To work as the Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the CAMHS Learning Disability team across Bristol and South Gloucestershire, to ensure a clinically effective, high quality nursing service is provided to children and young people with learning disabilities and their families/carers.

The post holder will lead in improving the quality of support to children and young people with moderate to profound learning disabilities, to improve early identification and treatment of challenging behaviour and mental health issues in children and young people with learning disabilities.

The post holder will be a role model for learning disability nurses and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. They will be highly skilled in managing an active caseload, providing support, advice and health promotion as well as holistic care packages to children and young people with learning disabilities and their families/carers, whilst working as part of, and promoting joint working with the CAMHS/Learning Disability team. The post holder will be expected to offer consultation and training when required to professionals in their own and other agencies.

To work closely with the CAMHS Learning Disability team to review, audit, develop and implement strategic changes to achieve AWP Core Values and Targets in line with government initiatives.

The CAMHS LD service has a well-established senior leadership team, this comprises of two psychiatrists, a senior psychologist, the admin lead and the post holder. The wider teams are made up of, psychologists, behavioural analysts, positive behavioural support practitioners, nurses, support worker and assistant psychologists. We also have a well-established and efficient administrative team.

The community LD services interface with many partner agencies, e.g. speech and language, community paediatricians, school health nurses, education psychologists, social care teams & school staff. We provide high quality care to children and young people in the Bristol and South Gloucestershire areas with a moderate to severe LD. We accept referrals for children and young people who present with mental health difficulties or challenging behaviour. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • carrying a caseload of complex children and young people with learning disabilities

  • supporting our team of nurses and support workers

  • supervising colleagues in the team with clinical queries

  • teaching and consulting to other CAMHS teams about people with learning disabilities

  • liaising and networking with other LD services

Support from the wider organisation - AWP has a Consultant learning disability Nurse who works across the trust and closely with Nursing colleagues in the Neurodevelopmental Services providing advice to colleagues, service users and carers with four main areas of responsibility which include expert practice, professional leadership, service development, research and education. Provision of Learning Disability Clinical supervision and reflection for progressive development which would be accessible for the postholder.

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • UK Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse
  • Formal post-graduate diploma level qualification in a relevant field e.g. PBS, NonMedical Prescribing, Clinical Leadership, CBT, or can demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge and expertise gained in practice
  • Recognised skills and knowledge in specialist area
  • Significant experience of working in a community learning disabilities team at Band 6 or above.
  • Experience of working with children, young people and families.
  • Significant post -qualifying experience of providing specialist assessment, treatment and co-ordinating care.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with children with learning disabilities
  • Skills with PBS Positive Behaviour Support Planning
  • Teaching & Assessment Qualification
