Job overview

The Integrated Access Partnership (IAP) is an innovative service that provides urgent and emergency mental health care. We operate across 999, 111 and urgent community services to offer urgent and emergency, integrated physical and mental health support 24/7. 

The IAP comprises a multidisciplinary team of registered and non-registered professionals, who work in rotation across our services, providing both remote and face-to-face mental health triage, assessment and care for patients, as well as clinical support and advice to emergency service professionals. We work tirelessly to get each patient the right care at the right time, providing a seamless, coordinated response that addresses both mental and physical health needs.

The IAP is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our award-winning mental health service as a Senior Associate Practitioner. 

Main duties of the job

Senior Associate Practitioner’s will provide:

  • Complex mental state assessments
  • Complex clinical risk assessments 
  • Complex clinical formulations 
  • A range of recovery focussed interventions 
  • Validation and de-escalation of people in mental health crisis
  • Distress tolerance and emotional regulation coaching techniques
  • Empowerment of persons in crisis, carers and families as a means of managing situations effectively
  • Supervision and support to associate practitioners with guidance from senior colleagues

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post involves providing focused, person-centred assessment and support to people experiencing, and professionals supporting those in an acute mental health crisis, who are often in a high level of distress both remotely and in person. 

Clinical Responsibilities:

•    Provide complex and sensitive information to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders (users of services, carers, multi-disciplinary staff, and other statutory / non statutory services) 
•    Contribute to the safe and effective day to day operations of the service managing clinical enquires 
•    Provide a high standard of written and verbal communication that is clear and in line with local guidance 
•    Role model effective communication; demonstrating empathy, respect, compassion and hope where there may be barriers to understanding. 
•    Communicate information in a way that makes it relevant and understandable in line with operational guidance 
•    Maintain professional relationships with all colleagues to ensure professional standards are met
•    Promote a culture that incorporates Trust values and is recovery focused 
•    Must have an awareness and ability to maintain personal boundaries 
•    Undertake complex clinical risk assessments, based on latest empirical evidence and compliant with local policies / procedures 
•    Reporting of exceptions, complaints and gaps in service 
•    Assist in data collection for the on-going evaluation of the service 
•    Assist in Promotion of the Service locally and nationally as appropriate 
•    Incident reporting - To report any incidents of harm or near miss in line with the Trust’s incident reporting policy supporting appropriate actions that are taken to reduce the risk of reoccurrence 
•    To assist with ensuring day to day practice reflects the highest standards of governance, clinical effectiveness, safety and person experience 
•    To be aware of the responsibility of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment 
•    To comply at all times with the Trust’s Safer Governance related policies 
•    Ensure good documentation is provided and entered within the appropriate systems of record sharing 
•    Plan assessment/appointments for remote and face to face assessment of service users where applicable
•    Discuss and arrange appropriate police response as required under guidance from senior staff 
•    To be responsible for the prevention and control of infection 
•    Ensure that individual episodes of care are delivered in a timely, effective and integrated manner 
•    Promote a recovery model that empowers persons, carers and relatives to be at the forefront of decision making, owning their packages of care / treatment 
•    Create, implement and update care plans as required 
•    Champion service users’ rights including: dignity, equality, diversity, choice and respect 
•    Provide advice, guidance and share information regarding mental health problems in line with practice boundaries, service operational procedures and information sharing protocols
•    Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults 
•    Implementation of NICE guidance and other statutory / best practice guidelines (if appropriate) under guidance from senior staff 
•    Maintain up to date clinical records in a timely and accurate manner 
•    Work under indirect supervision to undertake complex assessments and deliver interventions both in person and remotely, taking accountability for your own actions
•    Work within the operational policies and service specifications of the team. 
•    Work cooperatively with staff colleagues ensuring a ‘no hands off’ approach

Person specification

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience working in a community mental health setting
  • Experience of frontline triage and assessment within a MH setting
  • Qualified to degree level in a health and social care (or equivalent) subject
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of mental health issues, including UK mental health frameworks e.g MHA/MCA
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of using electronic patient record systems (e.g. RiO, Connecting Care, IAPTUS etc)
  • Experience of tele-triage
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Good IT skills
  • Training in psychosocial interventions (e.g. CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing)
