Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of  Clinical Teaching Fellow ST4-6 in Medical Education.

This a full time post but may be undertaken less than full time with agreement of the Director of Medical Education.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to become extensively involved in medical education in AWP for a year in the first instance.   

The post is suitable for psychiatry postgraduate trainees who have completed core training and are yet to enter higher training, or is appropriate for out of programme experience (OOP-E) from higher training from the Severn Deanery.

The post  may also have a protected clinical component to allow the trainee to maintain clinical pose and readiness and develop specific clinical skills during the year.

The purpose of the post is to work with the Director of Medical Education and the senior and extended faculty in AWP to promote excellence in medical education.

Main duties of the job

This is a fixed term contract for 12 months commencing on 6th August 2025 until 4th August 2026 (subject to employment clearances). 

The post holder will support the DME in implementing strategic initiatives in medical education, taking a lead role in identified projects around undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.   

They will help to support and develop the faculty of medical education in AWP, focusing on faculty development in areas of AWP not historically so well served. 

The post holder will take an active role in developing programmes of teaching, involving a variety of formats, such as seminar, tutorial, lecture, workshops, problem based learning and e learning materials. The focus here will be to provide the fellow with a wide range of opportunities to develop their teaching skills.

There will also be a strong emphasis on developing their portfolio as an educationist and their higher level experience in this regard.

They will take an active and supportive role in undergraduate teaching and will also contribute to the promotion of professionalism and higher level learning in undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.

The post holder will be encouraged to enrol as students on the Postgraduate Medical Education course run by the University with the expectation of achieving completion of at least the Certificate in Medical Education during the tenure of their post; funding and study leave is provided for this.

There is no on call associated with this post.

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Basic Medical Qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • TLHP certificate or equivalent

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Completion of Psychiatry Core Training in the UK prior to 2nd August 2022
  • Undertaken undergraduate medical training in English or have the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 6, Reading 6, Writing 6
  • current ST4-6 in Psychiatry within the Severn Deanery, eligible for an OOPE or completed core training within the Severn Deanery AND to be eligible to apply for higher training commencing in August 2022

Knowledge & skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellence in psychiatric clinical skills with knowledge and use of evidence based practice
  • Excellent communication skills with students, clinicians and senior colleagues and able to establish good working relationships with all members of a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills and time management and have a high level ability to organise own learning. Prepared to be flexible in working patterns.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Royal College of Psychiatry, Foundation School and University of Bristol curricula
  • To have undertaken a significant leadership role

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience and excellence in teaching undergraduates and postgraduates and at the multi professional level
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of a variety of teaching methodologies

Research and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of clinical audit and quality improvement and have an active interest in educational research
Desirable criteria
  • To have completed an audit project/ QIP in medical education

Travel

Essential criteria
  • Ability to fulfil all duties of the post including being able to travel independently to all academic sites relevant to the post
