Job overview

This post of a full time Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, based at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton & Somerset Hospital Foundation Trust in Taunton, is now advertised. It is aimed to work alongside the 4.5 FTE Consultants already in post.  The OMFS Department also provided services in the other hospitals of Somerset NHS Foundation Trust: Yeovil Hospital (outpatients, minor oral surgery, DSU GA / LA), Minehead Hospital (outpatient clinic, DSU LA skin and minor oral surgery)) and West Mendip Hospital (LA skin surgery DSU hub).

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant would ideally have a special interest and experience in the management of head and neck cancer (oropharyngeal), skin cancer of the head and neck as well as being able to provide the full range of services within the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Other specialist interests and skills which may complement the existing OMFS service and are within the framework of services Commissioned by the Commissioning Groups may be considered. The successful applicant for this full-time post would be expected to provide the support required at present to help with the post-pandemic recovery and national targets.

 

The unit provides Head & Neck services for Somerset and the team has a very good working relationship with the extended head and neck service in Somerset and in Devon (Exeter). Links with Bristol Head and Neck team may also be supported if the opportunity presents.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to peruse other interests like salivary gland sialo-endoscopy services, diagnosis, and treatment of temporomandibular joint pathology and dental implantology. The successful applicant for this full time post would be expected to provide the support required at present to help with the post pandemic recovery and national targets.

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC Possession of or eligibility for a CCST in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within 3 months On GMC specialist register for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Clinical experience and skills

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training in the management of head and neck skin cancer, surgical dermatology and facial plastics. Wide experience of, and practical skills in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a wide range of problems both emergency & elective within the Specialty Ability to take full, independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients

Management

Essential criteria
  • Ability to organise and manage clinical work and priorities, including outpatient services, surgical waiting lists and operating sessions. Ability to both lead a clinical team and also be a 'team player'

Academic Achievement, Teaching and Research

Essential criteria
  • Willingness and adaptability to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes. Ability to act as consultant trainer at specialty and pre-specialty levels Must be committed to register for CME and internal appraisal on appointment
