Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our well-established team delivering the Orthodontic service in Somerset.
This is a permanent, but flexible consultant appointment to deliver between 4 PAs and 10 PAs per week. The days the sessions are delivered is negotiable. We are also offering a competitive relocation package for the right applicant.
This is a newly created post that offers the benefits of moving into an experienced department, which is multi-specialty including: restorative dentistry, maxillofacial and oral surgery; while enjoying plentiful opportunities for professional development. Working with a team of two other consultants, two specialty doctors and a trainee therapist. There are numerous opportunities for mentoring and knowledge sharing.
We have also developed a great working partnership with the University of Bristol Dental Hospital.
Main duties of the job
We expect that you will join the team to provide a full range of orthodontic services, including taking an active role in the various MDTs. We currently hold MDTs for orthognathic and oral surgery patients, and a restorative MDT for the management of hypodontia. We are also open to hearing how we can complement our Orthodontic service with new skills and specialist interests in line with NHSE and the Commissioning Group’s framework of services.
The trust can also offer you a sabbatical built into your contract. This comprises of 3 months every 5 years. Although unpaid leave, it is built into the salary, meaning you will get paid 57/60ths every month; so by the time you get to the three months, you will be paid as well.

Qualifications & training
Essential criteria
- Registered GDC & on GDC specialist register in Orthodontics
- Successful completion of an SAC-approved 3 year training program in Orthodontics at consultant level
- Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Orthodontics
- Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Orthodontics (ISFE), or equivalent; or within six months of expected date of achieving ISFE.
Desirable criteria
- Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Evidence of up to date knowledge in orthodontic techniques, including multidisciplinary care
- • Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Wide experience in orthodontics and the use of a full range of orthodontic treatment techniques.
- Ability to manage complex orthodontic problems including providing care for cleft lip and palate, other craniofacial anomalies and restorative problems in conjunction with the Restorative Consultants
- Experience in planning and supervising treatment carried out by Specialty Dentists
- Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GDPs, nurses and other agencies
- Computer literate and able to adapt to utilising multiple IT support systems as part of working life.
Communication Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of a good standard of Literacy / English language skills
Planning & Organising Skills
Essential criteria
- Experience in planning and providing orthognathic treatment in combination with Maxillofacial Surgeons
- Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
