Job overview
The Surgical Specialist Pharmacist for Weston General Hospital is an important part of the team managing the services at Weston General Hospital, within the wider UHBW.
Main duties of the job
- Maintain and develop clinical pharmacy services to the Surgical Division including pre-op clinics, theatres and other medical wards at Weston General Hospital.
- Liaise with the relevant senior pharmacy, medical and nursing staff so as to promote safe and effective use of medicines within the Surgical division
- Provide information and support to the Surgical Division on drug usage and expenditure and work with senior clinicians in the directorate to maximise clinical effectiveness of medicines used and minimise cost.
- Develop, with senior clinicians in the directorate, a robust medicines related audit programme.
- Participate in the training of pharmacists, trainee pharmacists, undergraduate pharmacists and other pharmacy and NHS staff.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Masters degree (or equivalent) in pharmacy
- Postgraduate certificate (or equivalent) in Clinical Pharmacy, or currently working towards attaining
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Computer literacy, including Pharmacy applications
Desirable criteria
- Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain
- Independent prescribing qualification, or currently working towards attaining
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of UK hospital pharmacy experience
- Previous experience of audit or quality improvement
- Experience of one-to-one and small group teaching
- Knowledge of the legal framework for the dispensing, prescribing and administration of medicine
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and experience of Surgical medicine including common pharmaceutical care issues in this patient population
- Previous experience of line management or mentorship of junior pharmacists
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to operate multiple clinical digital systems
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Problem identification and solving
- Prioritisation and task management
- Ability to critically analyse prescriptions for clinical appropriateness
- Can organise own and others work to meet agreed deadlines
- Ability to make safe and clinically relevant decisions in high pressure environments
- Ability to manage a small team of junior pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on a daily basis
- Contribute to service development, quality improvement and audit
