Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior registered nurse to join the Division of Medicine as Band 6 Sister / Charge Nurse on Ward 17. Ward 17 is a 26 bedded mixed sex ward, it is a mixed speciality medical ward, which has 10 stroke and Neurology beds and also cares for patients with a variety of medical conditions.

As one of the smallest wards within the division of medicine we will offer support to our other Medical wards when necessary throughout busier periods of the year. The Division of Medicine is a fantastic place to work.

The learning opportunities within Medicine are endless; as a division we are passionate about self-development and progression. We are fortunate to have dedicated Practice development nurses who facilitate learning across all our wards and support all our staff. 

You will have a period of induction into the role, where you will work alongside the Ward Manager to understand the role of Band 6 sister and Ward co-ordinator. Various development opportunities will be made available to you to develop your leadership and management skills to run a highly effective ward.

You will be integral to the Multidisciplinary Team acting as patient advocate and providing expert knowledge and guidance. You will also provide supervision and training to peers and junior staff.

Main duties of the job

The post holders will be responsible for supporting the Band 7 Sister with the co-ordination of the ward and leading a skilled workforce to implement changes that will see an improvement to patient pathways.

We are looking for someone who as excellent clinical and leadership skills, who can make decisions and be a role model for the nursing workforce.

The successful candidate will work within an established team of nursing staff supported closely by the Senior Team.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience at Band 5
  • Scope roles relevant to speciality
  • Evidence of ward/dept management under supervision
  • Development of knowledge and skills in speciality
  • National and local nutritional initiatives/policies
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of carrying out and monitoring PDA process
  • Evidence of management responsibilities already undertaken

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current NMC registration
  • Up-to-date knowledge of professional issues
  • Teaching certificate (or evidence of working towards) or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrate professional post-registration development
Desirable criteria
  • Post Registration educational development
  • Participation in management development courses

Personal Attributes & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate good verbal communication skills with multidisciplinary team/clients/relatives
  • Demonstrate the ability to deliver educational and clinical skills training Able to accommodate the demands of the post with flexible working practice as required with good attendance and high standards of clinical care.
  • Precise and methodical working practice and demonstrate ability to work and manage the ward day to day unsupervised.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate knowledge of dealing with conflict supporting staff through mechanisms such as clinical supervision.
  • Provide evidence of supervisor/ implementation of teaching programmes for student nurses, eg preceptorship education, mentorship.
  • Evidence of change management and involvement in service development.
