Medical Secretary - Head and Neck ENT Department

Job overview

The division of Surgery and Cancer would like to invite applicants for a Band 3 post to join the medical secretary team within ENT Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.  14.25 hours per week - Fixed Term for 12 months.

They will need experience in managing the robust systems in place for the administrative engagement of patient pathways.  They will need to be able to work flexibly as part of the team, sometimes across sites, to produce clinical correspondence using Medisec digital transcription software from outpatient and inpatient attendances.

Experience in using the PTL (Patient Tracking List) to manage patient’s pathway is paramount. A knowledge of medical terminology alongside previous experience of working in a clerical / secretarial role is desirable.

You will be required to display tact and diplomacy, and have developed communication skills when dealing with senior staff, patients, colleagues and the general public.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 3 GCSE’s including English and Maths at Grade C or above or suitable equivalent qualification or equivalent experience
  • RSA III or NVQ III or suitable equivalent level administrative qualification or equivalent experience
  • ECDL or equivalent qualification / demonstrable experience
Desirable criteria
  • Business Administration Level II Apprenticeship

Knowledge and Exprience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience working in a clerical/administrative role
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of Microsoft packages including Word
  • Customer care experience
  • Ability to work to and promote Standard operating procedures/performance targets
Desirable criteria
  • Fully conversant with all waiting list functions on PAS and the ability to action these independently.
  • Thorough knowledge of healthcare system and processes
  • Understanding of Primary Care, GP and Community Services
  • Knowledge of referral to treatment patient access policies and procedures
  • Understanding of patient priorities and targets in relation to appointments and waiting times, specifically Referral to Treatment
