Operational Director of Estates and Facilities

This position is vital to ensure that we continue to provide high levels of service to our patients and staff.

Working closely with the Director of Innovation & Infrastructure who maintains overall accountability for the Estates & Facilities Services, the Operational Director of Estates and Facilities will play a substantial role in ensuring that the corporate objectives of the Trust are achieved with specific focus on the delivery of suitable, sustainable, safe and secure premises and equipment.

The post holder will hold a relevant degree, and ideally hold a Masters level qualification in leadership/related subject, in addition to demonstrable evidence of having progressed their own personal development.

The successful candidate will have significant experience as a senior manager in a large, complex healthcare organisation and a demonstrable track record of the operational delivery across the full range of Estates and Facilities services. These services include; Estates Management, Portering, Domestic Services, Transport, Travel and Access, Sustainability (Green Plan), Linen and Laundry, Fire Safety, Car Parking, Security & Violence Reduction, Residential Accommodation, Space Utilisation, Waste Management, Land and Property Management, Medical Technical Services, and outsourced contracts for Catering, Car Parking & Security and Sterile Services (HSDU) and lead for Health & Safety.

As the Operational Director of Estates & Facilities, the post holder must be capable of effective decision making, taking responsibility for acting on those decisions, implementing the requirements and being accountable for outcomes. The post holder will work closely with the Director of Innovation & Infrastructure, Head of Capital Infrastructure and other Trust senior managers (clinical and corporate), along with statutory bodies and external agencies.

The post holder will be responsible for the quality standards, delivery, monitoring, risk management and review of operational performance to ensure a professional, high quality, cost effective and efficient service to meet the demands of the organisation, our patients and staff. We are seeking someone who is committed to delivering excellent non-clinical services to DBTH, to make effective use of resources to support the delivery of the Trust vision, whilst championing a safe environment for staff, patients and visitors.

Stakeholder Groups will take place on Tuesday 17th September 2024 with formal interviews taking place on Thursday 19th September 2024.

  • Professional / academic qualification at Degree level or equivalent experience
  • Masters level or equivalent in technical or E&F discipline or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuing personal and professional development in E&F disciplines
  • Further management or relevant professional qualifications e.g. Chartered Status or equivalent experience

Knowledge and experience

  • Professional background, including specialist knowledge, in a minimum of one of the following professions: • Construction • Engineering • Facilities Management
  • At least 2 years’ experience working at Deputy or Director level within Estates & Facilities in the NHS or private healthcare sector
  • Evidence of experience of leading, or holding a significant formal role within a recognised governance structure, in the following areas: • Health and Safety • NHS Net Zero • Fire Safety
  • Sound knowledge of corporate governance and an understanding of risk management
  • Knowledge of national NHS strategy and policy, in particular in relation to its impact on Acute Hospital services
  • Effective and strategic influencing
  • Evidence of excellent management and leadership, with ability to think and work strategically
  • Evidence of understanding of commercial, governance, operational and legal structures and their application
  • Previous experience in managing a large complex EFM service in the NHS or Private Healthcare sector
  • Managing a diverse workforce
  • Management of large FM outsourced contracts
