Colorectal/Stoma Care Specialist Nurse

Job overview

The Colorectal Nurse Specialist will have a high level of responsibility to ensure that a comprehensive specialised colorectal service is provided at the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, leading a team of specialist nurses.

They will provide professional and clinical leadership in the care of patients with colorectal disease and associated conditions. They will Act as resource to patients, carers and other health care professionals within the hospital and community by providing expert knowledge and advice.

They will communicate effectively as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team to achieve a co-ordinated service across the Trust.

They will Plan, develop and participate in speciality educational programmes and participate in research and audit by the colorectal nursing team and across the Trust and they will also

Participate in the development and provision of patient information and user issues.

Main duties of the job

·      To act as a clinical lead in delivery of safe and high quality care for patients under the colorectal team. To support delivery of Trust objectives.  To act as a point of reference with regard to clinical/managerial issues within the colorectal service. To manage the service on a day-to-day basis including:

 

·         Sickness/absence management

  • Incident / Complaint investigation outcomes are shared widely and actions completed evidenced and monitored
  • Work in conjunction with Clinical Educator to ensure Training & Development of all staff match the needs of service.
  • Ensure that patients receive safe and high quality care from all nursing staff within the ward team
  • Work collaboratively in meeting national / local specific outcome measures

·         Give specialist clinical telephone advice to patients on lifestyle pre and post-surgery

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience working as a Band 6 as a clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Highly specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and experience
  • Evidence of competence across a range of clinical assessment skills required for the role.
  • Complex reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis to inform assessments, clinical judgements and decisions.
  • Evidence of management skills gained through theory and or practice
Desirable criteria
  • Experience running and managing nurse led clinics independently
  • Knowledge and experience managing patients with colorectal conditions

Qualifications

  • First level Registered Nurse – current registration
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • IT literate
