Consultant All Age Hospital Liaison Psychiatrist

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Be part of this exciting opportunity as a Consultant in All Age Liaison Psychiatry for the Doncaster Care Group, developing and enhancing services of patients in the general hospital, with an excellent established team.

The hospital liaison team is based at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, (DRI) Doncaster. The team has been operational since 2020, prior to this, services have been covered by the Crisis team.

The Team provides 7 day a week, emergency, hospital-based mental health assessments for service users who have presented to A&E or have been admitted to the medical wards. The team provides short-term, time-limited input, and has a liaison role.

Hospital Liaison’s caseload on average is around 25 patients, at any given time, including older age patients. Referrals mainly come through DRI. The consultant directly reviews on average 2-3 patients per day and can go up to 10 per week. Occasionally a review is required from Mexborough/Montague patients (one a week); but this very rarely require a face-to-face review.

This service is part of Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust and serves a total population of approximately 308 000.  The Trust provides in addition, a comprehensive General Adult, Old Age, Intellectual Disability, Rehabilitation and Social, Addictions and Perinatal Psychiatry service to Rotherham, Doncaster, and Scunthorpe. Doncaster also provides Forensic Psychiatry services.

3.    In addition, the Consultant will supervise the clinical caseload of the team members and the work of any trainee doctors who may be attached to the service. The role will also support the existing liaison team in deciding the most appropriate intervention for patients referred to the service. This will include facilitating discharge planning and timely communication with Primary Care, CMHT’s  and Inpatient Services.
4.    The clinical work will involve the assessment and psychiatric treatment of patients directly or through the supervision of other team members.
5.    Lead role in supporting the wider team in complex and high-risk case management.
