We are seeking five enthusiastic and dedicated Biomedical Science Assistants (Higher level) to support the Scientific and Consultant teams in the department of Histopathology at sites across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. 

A Biomedical Science Assistant is an integral part of a pathology laboratory team. The role supports Biomedical Scientists in delivering a first class diagnostic service to medical professionals.  This role is both challenging and rewarding. It is centred around ensuring patients receive the very best level of care in the analysis of their samples and the results that are produced. These results inform medical professionals on important decisions that they make regarding patient care.

The posts will be located at the following histopathology laboratories:

1 Full time & 1 part time (16 hours per week) post at Doncaster Royal Infirmary

2 Full time posts at Chesterfield Royal Hospital

1 Full time post at Royal Hallamshire Hospital

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required to undertake:

  • Roles in specimen reception, specimen dissection transcription, specimen processing as well as a range of other duties including computer data entry, slide scanning for Digital pathology, operation of laboratory equipment, filing and retrieval of specimens, glass slides and paraffin blocks.
  • Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and processing.
  • Deal with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff and other Service Users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.
  • Preparation of slides to load and unload digital pathology scanners.
  • Assist Scientific Staff in laboratory activities.
  • Store and retrieve biological material.

The standard working day will vary by site with start and end times confirmed at interview.

The Rotherham Histopathology department deals with multiple tissue specimens (biopsy, surgical resection, cytology and post mortem examination) and includes expertise in:

Dermatopathology; breast, gynaecology, endocrine, genito-urinary & gastro-intestinal pathology. The department is UKAS accredited and adheres to ISO15189:2022.

The Department is part of the larger South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Partnership (SYBP). The aim of the Partnership is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above (or equivalent experience/quals)
  • Level 3 qualification e.g. NVQ, 2 A-Levels, Apprenticeship or IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part I) plus Significant laboratory experience or Extensive laboratory experience in the relevant discipline
