Applications are invited for the post of Specialist Scientific Lead in Histological Dissection based at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. The post is permanent and full time.
All applicants must hold HCPC registration and possess a relevant higher degree or equivalent.
Suitable applicants must hold the Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection or equivalent and either hold the IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Breast, Lower GI or Urological Pathology or have significant relevant experience of dissection of RCPath category D & E specimens.
CPD is supported with a commitment to exploring new and improved training methods. Staff are encouraged to engage in further study.
You should be a good communicator, with the ability to plan your own workload.
The service is represented by sub-specialist expert Consultant Histopathologists, a team of capable Biomedical Scientists, skilled non-registered healthcare professionals and a competent team of admin and clerical staff.
Please note eligible candidates will be currently working in one of the 5 South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw partner organisations.
Main duties of the job
- Dissect and sample specimens that fall within the RCPath designation of category A, B and C and a range of category D & E specimens.
- Work collaboratively with medical staff in the preparation, dissection and sampling of category D or E specimens.
- Deliver histological dissection training to Biomedical Scientist staff, other staff grades (including medical staff and clinical scientists) and placement students.
- Participate in the sampling of fresh tissue for research and the evaluation of research portfolios, plus the provision of tissue for external research and trials (where appropriate).

- Relevant BSc Degree
- FIBMS (Histopathology) or MSc (in Histopathology discipline or equivalent) or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (Histopathology) or Post Graduate Diploma or Demonstrable Experience
- Registration with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist.
- Must hold the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection or have significant relevant experience of dissection of RCPath category A, B, C Histological specimens
- Evidence of continuous CPD and development

- Relevant scientific knowledge appropriate to Histopathology.

- Analytical and judgemental skills in evaluating complex ranges of issues including but not limited to Quality, Service Development, Organisational and Staffing Issues.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to deal with a number of conflicting priorities in a calm and professional manner working to demanding timescales.
- Ability to anticipate problems, appraise risks and make effective decisions.
- Knowledge of health and safety and procedures for dealing with hazards and emergency situations (COSHH legislation, fire regulations, infectious, chemical and radioactive materials, data protection, risk assessment).
- Strong analytical skills; literacy, IT and numeracy skills with the ability to produce and deliver a range of documents or presentations for a wide variety of audiences.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience and advanced knowledge of a range of histology techniques including but not limited to tissue fixation, tissue processing, tissue decalcification, fat clearance, image capture for multiple specimen types.
- Proven knowledge and experience of a range of highly specialised analytical laboratory techniques.
- Substantial post-registration experience in an ISO 15189 accredited NHS histology laboratory.
- Experience in routine Human Resource issues including, engagement, communication, leadership and management.
- Significant practical experience of dissection of category D & E specimens
- Experience of training staff in complex histological dissection procedures
- Experience in demonstrating leadership qualities and supervisory skills
- Ability to work with other staff to improve and develop working practices
Desirable criteria
- Experience of the clinical governance agenda including clinical risk and safety.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
