Job overview
We are looking to recruit a permanent Band 7 qualified Family Therapist, to work within the Paediatric Psychology Department at the Sheffield Children's Hospital, providing clinical input into the chronic pain pathways with an element of cross speciality work.
There is a strong culture of research and training within the Paediatric Psychology Department, and a huge amount of expertise in working with children with physical health problems.
This post will be suitable for those who have UKCP registration in place.
Main duties of the job
- To provide specialist systemic family therapy assessments for children/ adolescents who may be experiencing severe, highly complex and persistent physical and mental health problems.
- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the formulation and implementation of treatment plans taking into account relevant evidence-based research, theory, practice and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes which have shaped the child/adolescent, their parents/carers and family.
- To provide specialist systemic therapeutic treatment for children, adolescents, their parents/carers and families referred to the Paediatric Service, with severe, highly complex and persistent physical and mental health problems. This may include some group and reflecting team interventions as well as face to face/virtual appointments.
- To provide specialist systemic advice, guidance and consultation to professional colleagues within Sheffield Children’s Hospital and related external agencies who work with children/young people contributing directly to clients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
- To contribute to CPD and ongoing training needs for yourself and the team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
- To provide specialist systemic family therapy assessments for children/ adolescents who may be experiencing severe, highly complex and persistent physical and mental health problems.
- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the formulation and implementation of treatment plans taking into account relevant evidence-based research, theory, practice and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes which have shaped the child/adolescent, their parents/carers and family.
- To provide specialist systemic therapeutic treatment for children, adolescents, their parents/carers and families referred to the Paediatric Service, with severe, highly complex and persistent physical and mental health problems. This may include some group and reflecting team interventions as well as face to face/virtual appointments.
- To provide specialist systemic advice, guidance and consultation to professional colleagues within Sheffield Children’s Hospital and related external agencies who work with children/young people contributing directly to clients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
- To be responsible for working within the appropriate Child Protection and Deliberate Self Harm guidelines in relation to own cases. This includes reporting to and liaising with multi-disciplinary service and external agency staff (eg Social Services staff, CAMHS colleagues, adult mental health staff, primary health and hospital staff, education staff, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, named child protection worker).
- To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on aspects of risk assessment and risk management. This may include some group and reflecting team interventions as well as face to face/virtual appointments.

Person specification
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Skills in the use of complex methods of assessment intervention and management with children and adolescents with complex and significant mental health problems frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
- Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to children of all ages, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non professional group
- Relevant master’s level knowledge of research design and methodology
- Some knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health
Desirable criteria
- Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. eating disorder, dual diagnoses, severely challenging behaviours etc.)
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Postgraduate qualification in relevant mental health/social welfare profession and demonstrable practice
- Masters/Doctoral level qualification in Family Systemic Psychotherapy or equivalent
- Registration as a systemic family therapist with the UKCP
Desirable criteria
- Post-qualification training and accreditation in a specialised area of psychological practice
Experience
Essential criteria
- Practice in relevant first profession (in Health and/or Social Care settings)
- Experience of working and communicating with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course; in particular with children and young people, as well as work with family groups and adults, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems and verbal and physical abuse.
- Experience of a wide variety of child & family clinical presentations across the full range of severity and care settings
- Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a multi disciplinary care p
Desirable criteria
- Experience of representing family therapy within the context of multi disciplinary care.
- Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision
- Experience of assessing and treating clients across the full range of care settings, including inpatient care.
- Experience of working in different cultural contexts
