Come and join our innovative team within a specialist Children's Hospital. We currently have a vacancy for a Nurse Specialist in our Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Team to cover a period of maternity leave.

As a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist, our expectations are that you would act as a professional role model and source of expertise to colleagues within the Unit, Trust and wider health community. You will have experience of working with children and young people with  a range of conditions which may require Haematopoietic Transplant. We are looking for highly motivated individuals with proven clinical expertise, enhanced communication skills and a desire to contribute to the development of nursing in this evolving speciality. It is an exciting and challenging role with many opportunities for personal and professional development with a dedicated Clinical Educator available to guide and assist your development. The successful post holder will contribute to the successful achievement of the Trust corporate objectives, leading on clinical objectives, patient experience and staff satisfaction.

The Haematology and Oncology Unit comprises a 17 bedded in patient facility, 9 bedded Day Care Unit and a very busy dedicated out patient’s clinic area. The thriving multi-disciplinary team includes a Bone Marrow Transplant and Apheresis Team, Paediatric Oncology Outreach Team, Late Effects Service, Haemophilia and Non Malignant Haematology Service.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

  • The post holder will be a practitioner within the Bone Marrow Transplant Team who are responsible for providing and co-ordinating a supportive service for patients, carers and their families who have a diagnosis requiring an apheresis procedure/bone marrow transplant.  
  • The post holder will deliver aspects of clinical care for apheresis/transplant patients, ensuring a safe environment. 
  • In conjunction with colleagues the post holder will contribute to the development and audit of clinical standards.  This will include contribution to the formulation of policies, procedures and guidelines as set out in regulatory guidance ensuring information is evidence based, clinically effective and is benchmarked against best practice standards. 
  • The post holder will promote a seamless service within a multi-professional framework and will contribute to the continuing development of the speciality service. This will be achieved through the core dimensions of the role, clinical practice, leadership, and acting as the patient advocate through audit and education. 
  • The post holder is required to contribute to and participate in regulatory inspections, annual audit programme and research projects. 
  • The post holder will work autonomously and also within a small team, working flexibly to meet the demands of the service. 
  • The post holder will act as an expert resource to other healthcare professionals.

Clinical 

  • Develop and maintain clinical apheresis competence  
  • Demonstrate clinical skills, promote clinical excellence and contribute towards a multi-professional approach in the management of patients within the specialist area, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements. 
  • Establish and maintain effective written and verbal communication links with a broad spectrum of professionals within the local Trust, the region and wider geographically area. 
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their carers providing pre and post treatment advice including obtaining informed consent prior to treatment and using advanced communication skills. 
  • Support and empower patients, their relatives and carers, ensuring that they receive the required information to enable them to give informed consent and lead or participate in their care delivery. 
  • In conjunction with the other team members, attend appropriate clinics, undertaking clinical procedures and investigations as required. 
  • Liaise with manufacturers and suppliers of machines and consumables. 
  • Facilitate and participate in multi-disciplinary research in the area of apheresis and bone marrow transplantation.  

Advocate 

  • Ensure that high standards of transplantation/apheresis care are given and maintained and act when standards are not being met. 
  • Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care. 
  • Act as the patients advocate and ambassador respecting patient confidentiality and privacy with respect for diverse cultural backgrounds and requirements. 
  • Support and enable patients to make informed decisions. 
  • Recognise, prevent and diffuse potential areas of conflict and where required take a key role in the management of the outcome.

Clinical Governance / Quality 

  • Contribute to the maintenance of nursing practice standards to meet regulations including the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and Joint Accreditation Committee-ISCT & EBMT (JACIE). 
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others and participate in the development of the same. 
  • Be responsible for the delivery of excellent patient care through contributing to the implementation and monitoring clinical standards and measuring their outcomes and effectiveness. 
  • Responsible for patient records both paper and electronic ensuring compliance with Data Protection and patient confidentiality legislation. 
  • Be accountable for accurate data collection and the maintenance of patient records relating to therapeutic apheresis services treatment/transplantation procedures. 
  • Record, amend and file patient information in an accurate and traceable manner to ensure an audit trail. 
  • Continually monitor standards of care and contribute in the improvement of care through benchmarking and Clinical Audit and Research. 
  • Support and facilitate research evidence-based practice in the specialist area. 
  • Participate in audit of activities e.g. license inspections 
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of the service through implementation of the findings of audit and research based evidence.  
  • Disseminate good practice by pursuing opportunities to present work at national conferences or via publications. 
  • Promote patient and public involvement activities in the specialist area leading to service improvement including developing nurse led care as appropriate. 
  • Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights. 

Specialist Education / Training 

  • Undergo training, achieve competence and demonstrate the maintenance of occupational competence in therapeutic apheresis nursing (currently revalidated every two years). 
  • Undergo training, achieve competence and maintain specialist knowledge in clinical skills as identified. 
  • Take responsibility for own continuing professional development and performance, including identifying own development needs and maintain own portfolio in accordance with NMC re-registration requirements. 
  • Participates in the supervision and the teaching of pre registration students, new staff members and junior medical staff. 
  • Provides education, awareness sessions and training related to the speciality. 
  • Supports colleagues in ensuring the clinical environment is conductive to effective learning. 

Professional Responsibility 

  • Maintain active status on NMC register. 
  • Act always in accordance with NMC code of conduct and guiding documents, Health Care Standards. 
  • Adhere to Trust policy and procedure. 
  • Maintain a professional portfolio. 
  • Maintain a high level of awareness of relevant research issues and trends within the specialist area of practice and in nursing generally. 
  • Take an active part in the development of nursing in the Trust via participation in professional nursing forum and shared governance initiatives. 
  • Take responsibility for personal development and education with regard to Personal Development Plan objectives.  
  • Participate in Clinical Supervision for self and others and utilise reflective practice techniques. 
  • Provide support and development for nurses through mentorship. 
  • The post holder is responsible for ensuring the safety of patients at all times and promoting a safety culture through the effective management of risk.
