Teaching Fellow

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Trainee (ST3-5)

Trosolwg o'r swydd

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Teaching Fellow (or two LTFT fellows) in Undergraduate Medical Education at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.  This post represents an exciting development in the provision of undergraduate teaching in Child Health, as part of the University of Sheffield’s MBChB degree. The post-holder will benefit from the opportunity to work closely with undergraduates undertaking their rotation in Child Health at SC(NHS)FT.  The organisation and delivery of the undergraduate rotation has been revised to ensure all students have exposure to a broad range of patients, in different settings, with dedicated teaching and support. The Fellow will be part of an Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) team responsible for the evolution of the course and the delivery of high-quality undergraduate education to our doctors, and paediatricians, of the future. There may be the option to split the post with some clinical daytime work dependent on the appointee’s preference, but the focus of the post is on teaching. The post holder will be encouraged and supported to gain a qualification in medical education and consider undertaking or contributing to research in the field of Medical Education.  This post is suitable for a Medical Education OOPE, and applications are invited from candidates with training and experience in paediatric medicine who would like to be involved in this exciting development.

The post holder’s primary duties will be to teach, mentor and assess students, and play a significant contributory role in the evolution and running of the Child Health course. Their responsibilities will include the delivery and coordination of the teaching of the students allocated to SC(NHS)FT for their clinical placement. This is likely to include an introductory session in week 1, thrice weekly bedside teaching, AAU and jaundice teaching clinics, running practical skills sessions, supervision of students seeing patients on the Acute Assessment Unit, coordination of the mentoring scheme for students and delivery of ILAs.  We anticipate the appointed fellow will train to become an assessor/examiner, both helping to mark the written work and performing formative and summative assessments. In addition the fellow may be asked to deliver lectures.

The fellow will be expected to contribute to the Child Health course by writing exam questions for Phase 3a examinations, and other phase examinations that include Child Health. These will be overseen by the Research and Teaching Fellow and DUGME. There are opportunities to attend an examination writing course run by the University and attend meetings at the Medical School.  They will be required to contribute to the Phase 3a written examination internal quality assurance, standard setting and marking. There will be opportunities to contribute more widely to Medical School activities such as interviewing for medical school entry.
