Senior Staff Nurse

NHS AfC: Band 6

Job overview

A vacancy has arisen for a flexible and motivated Band 6 staff nurse to complement our small team of paediatric nurses with an interest in ophthalmology to work both independently and in support of the team of Dr’s, Orthoptists and Optometrists in the provision of high-quality care. We are based in the ophthalmic outpatient department at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and cover clinics in ophthalmology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital too when children and young people are being seen.

Ophthalmology is a very rewarding, specialised and dynamic clinical discipline that maintains clinical links with inpatient facilities across the site as well as with the emergency department and acute admissions unit.

Given the highly specialist nature of our work we are looking for a nurse who has experience and knowledge of this discipline, who has excellent communication and leadership skills, in addition to a passion to enhance their skills and knowledge through varying ophthalmic courses and other development opportunities.

Main duties of the job

  • To co-ordinate and provide skilled nursing care to patients, in accordance with responsibilities under the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • To participate in the continued development of nursing, including the supervision, teaching and development of junior nurses and support staff.
  • Act as an advocate for patients.
  • To plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for an allocated patient group, in consideration of individual need, using prioritisation and delegation skills.
  • To assist the Ward Manager in managing and developing the Ward/Department.
  • To work collaboratively within a Multidisciplinary team, internal and external to the organisation, to facilitate holistic seamless care delivery for all Trust Patients.
  • To give leadership to junior staff and manage the Ward/Unit in the absence of the ward manager.
  • To support the ward manager in his/her role and participate in managing the ward, staff and resources, to maintain standards within the clinical governance agenda.
  • To represent the ward manager at relevant meetings and forums.
  • To deputise for the ward manager when required and act as role model and leader to other junior staff
