An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our established neuro / oncology therapy team at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be a key member of the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy teams, who provide care to children in both an in and outpatient setting. The Neuro/ oncology team are an experienced, friendly, supportive, compassionate, and forward-thinking team, and you will gain a wealth of knowledge, skills, and experience through working with them and with a diverse patient group. The team works with infants, children and young people who have delayed development, acquired neurological injuries and / or an oncology diagnosis.
You will be flexible, organised and have great interpersonal skills.
You as the Therapy Assistant Practitioner will be responsible for carrying out direct unsupervised patient contact and will report back to a qualified professional, you will be liaising with a wide variety of staff in order to support patient care, maintaining and ordering a range of equipment, maintaining patient databases, and working in a range of inpatient, outpatient, and clinic settings in a rapidly changing environment.

- To be responsible for the assessment, treatment and referral of CYP with a range of conditions who present with routine, non-complex symptoms.
- To undertake appropriate administrative, clerical, and housekeeping duties.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
CLINICAL
- To work within the speciality of neuro oncology both independently and in conjunction with a registered therapist.
- To assist the registered therapist in the physical assessment and treatment of infants, CYP & young people with a wide range of conditions and of all ages.
- To manage a caseload of CYP as delegated by the registered therapist. This will include:
- Infants with developmental delay – with a range of different health conditions and in various inpatient settings.
- CYP following elective neurosurgery or acute neurological conditions.
- CYP undergoing treatment for cancer.
· To work autonomously in consultation with a registered member of staff to independently execute a treatment programme with a CYP or group of CYPs using a variety of treatment techniques e.g.
- Mobilising as per post-op instructions
- Progressing mobility, changing walking aids and stair assessments.
- Exercise progression and exercise programme formation.
- Setting up and conducting developmental play and positioning programmes.
- To be responsible for decision making during treatment following guidelines from registered staff.
- To independently modify the progress of a CYPs treatment in relation to desired outcomes and based on sound knowledge of the CYPs condition.
- To conduct standardised developmental screening assessments.
- To order equipment prescribed by therapists and manage existing therapy equipment therapy within the trust.
- To acknowledge any limitations in competence when accepting assigned duties from registered staff and to be able to identify when referral to a registered therapist is required.
- To be responsible for maintaining equipment including basic safety checks and arranging for modifications and repairs.
- To prepare and create therapy notes transferring appropriate information from the medical notes.
- To be responsible for receiving and passing on information within the multi-disciplinary team. This includes the handling of confidential and occasionally sensitive information.
- To communicate effectively with CYP and families. This includes significant explanation of tasks requiring persuasion and encouragement which is appropriate to the age and understanding of the CYP. It may also require overcoming barriers to communication e.g. to parents / CYP whose first language is not English.
- To represent the therapy team at multi-professional meetings and communicate effectively with other team members to aid clinical decision making.
- To offer education to ward staff through teaching sessions.
- To offer options to work flexibly to meet the schedules of patient’s families / carers e.g. working later at times to support a family who can only visit after school hours.
PROFESSIONAL
- To undertake risk assessments on a daily basis, e.g. work space, equipment, patients and self, using judgement skills to make the necessary adjustments in line with health and safety regulations.
- To accurately document and record basic data related to clinical observation, patient activity and equipment supplied.
- To comply with the Health and Safety at work regulations and all other health, safety and security standards in accordance with Trust policies.
- To treat as confidential information obtained during the course of duties undertaken.
- To be responsible for and maintain own development.
- To offer supervision to staff who are less experienced than themselves, including those at Band 2 and 3 and pre-registration students.
- To participate in the staff appraisal scheme and maintain a personal development plan.
- To attend and participate in the Trust mandatory training plus departmental in-service training.

ORGANISATIONAL
- To independently manage own caseload and priorities.
- Keep the work area tidy, therapy equipment clean and ensure that no damaged or problem equipment is used.
- To contribute to the development, implementation and promotion of departmental and Trust policies and procedures.
- To ensure effective use of time, resources, and organisational skills in order to promote an organised and efficient working environment.
- To undertake appropriate administrative and housekeeping duties to promote good practice and efficient organisation of the department.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- 5 GCSE’s including English & Maths A-C (grades 9-4) at GCSE or Functional skills equivalent.
- 3 A-levels or Health and Science T-Level or Level 3 equivalent.
- Relevant competencies, theoretical knowledge, expertise and training in CYP development.
Desirable criteria
- Level 5 qualification or Foundation degree level training.
- Manual Handling training
- Resuscitation / Life saving skills
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with CYP with disabilities or long term health conditions.
- Experience of supporting others.

- Understanding of family dynamics and how to develop working relationships with CYPs and their families.

- To possess a thorough understanding of illness and dysfunction, safety issues, treatment techniques and the ability to analyse the effectiveness of treatment and the skill to refer back to a registered therapist.
