Senior Clinical Psychologist

NHS AfC: Band 8a

About us

At Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust we provide a range of mental health, learning disability, substance misuse, primary care and other specialist services designed around the needs of people in our city.

We have a dedicated and skilful team of people caring in Sheffield, which you could become a part of.

Our values are at the heart of everything we do. These are: working together for our service users, respect and kindness, everyone counts, commitment to quality, improving lives.

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic Clinical Psychologist to join our team in Acute Inpatient Services. This is an 8a vacancy, however, we would welcome applications from newly qualified CP looking for a B7 post.

You will be joining a vibrant, supportive team which includes 4 inpatient wards, Liaison Psychiatry and Home Treatment. The successful candidate will be based on our inpatient wards at the Michael Carlisle Centre, with a shared office space for psychology staff. Our team consists of Principal and Senior CPs, CAPs, and is led by a Consultant CP who is also an Approved Clinician.

We are involved in the Culture of Care programme, part of NHS England’s Quality Transformation aimed at developing safe, compassionate, culturally competent wards. We have also been selected to develop the Safe2Share tool on our wards. You will have a key role in supporting and implementing these changes, with opportunities to be innovative and influential.

Our team recognises the value and importance of embedding practice-based research in acute settings. We collaborate with the University of Sheffield and have an established Acute Research Group.

The post will suit a candidate who has experience and interest in working with people with complex mental health difficulties within a MDT. Psychology roles are highly valued by the ward teams.

In return we offer a commitment to supporting CPD and providing supervision by senior members of the psychology team.

Main duties of the job

The post will suit a candidate who has experience and interest in working with people with severe, chronic and complex mental health difficulties within a multidisciplinary team and who can offer both direct and indirect work with service users, their families/carers and staff. You will be involved in offering team formulation, reflective practice and post-incident support, as well as providing a key role as part of the senior leadership team on the ward. Psychology roles are highly valued by the ward teams and a positive approach and commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork is essential.

- To provide specialist psychological assessment, formulation and evidence based short term interventions for individuals and/or families/carers with service users who are presenting with highly complex and distressing psychological problems, including psychosis and complex trauma.

- To provide clinical leadership and contribute to the provision of a trauma-informed and least restrictive environment through supporting the staff team in their decision making and offering indirect support through team formulation, reflective practice and individual supervision.

- To provide clinical supervision to Trainee Clinical Psychologists and Trainee/Qualified Clinical Associate Psychologists.

- To ensure the clinical effectiveness of own practice and of service functioning by undertaking research and development activities relevant to acute inpatient settings.
