Job overview

Jessop Fertility is excited to be recruiting a Medical Lab Assistant to support our team of Clinical Embryologists deliver our high quality service. This position would suit an individual early on their career path who is keen to pursue a career in healthcare science. It would also be an excellent opportunity to obtain crucial relevant experience for those interested in applying for STP in Embryology. However, there are no plans at this time for us to offer the successful applicant an opportunity to apply for an STP "In Service" position.

 

Main duties of the job

1.  Assist scientific staff in appropriate laboratory activities.

2.  Set up all laboratory notes, which includes summarising medical history and past treatments, and checking consents and blood test results.

3.  To prepare culture medium and dishes for culturing human sperm, eggs and embryos for treatment. 

4.  Treat patients with dignity and respect as they attend for a potentially stressful appointment. 

5.  Take part in witnessing of laboratory procedures, as per HFEA regulation.

6.  Perform trial sperm preparations. 

7.  Freeze donor sperm samples.

8.  Safe use of liquid nitrogen.

9.  Participate in audits of stored material (sperm, eggs and embryos)

10. Register patients and record patient and test details accurately.

11. Train to do additional tasks such as oocyte recoveries and sperm preparations for treatment, if appropriate.

12. To use Ideas (specialist electronic patient system) to access and input accurate patient data.

Jessop Fertility’s Assisted Conception Unit provides excellent care to patients seeking assisted reproductive treatment. We deliver approximately 600 cycles of IVF and ICSI per year along with intra-uterine insemination and frozen embryo replacement cycles. The unit also maintains donor sperm and egg banks and carries out fertility preservation for patients undergoing medical treatment likely to adversely affect their fertility. All licensed care is carried out under strict regulation by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).

Qualifications and experience

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Maths and English at C/4 or above
  • Level 3 qualification e.g. NVQ, 2 A-Levels, Apprenticeship or IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part I) or laboratory experience in the relevant discipline

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy
  • Understanding of job content and fertility treatment
  • Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices
Desirable criteria
  • Experience with a range of laboratory techniques, including tissue culture and sterile techniques
  • Previous NHS laboratory experience
