Job overview

We are looking to appoint a Whole time Locum Consultant Thoracic Surgeon to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.   This is a fixed term post for 12 months. Based at Northern General Hospital. 

We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues be responsible for the provision of the Thoracic Surgery service.  They will work closely with Consultant colleagues to provide an elective service and partake in the emergency cover rota.  In addition to the main clinical duties at the Northern General Hospital the post holder will provide an advisory and consultative service to medical and surgical colleagues within the catchment area of the Sub-Regional Unit.

 

The post-holder will also be expected to undertake clinics at the Northern General Hospital and any of our local District General Hospitals in order to see new and follow-up patients, and to attend regular audit meetings. The post holder will be required to provide the surgical opinion at Thoracic MDT’s both within STH and externally at our partner District General Hospitals.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise.
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview.
  • FRCS (CTh) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Academic Degree

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as an independent practitioner in the specialty covered by the post.
  • Possess broad clinical experience in the general aspects of the post plus any specific experience required for the post.
  • Comprehensive training in Thoracic Surgery.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression.
  • Capacity to use and develop a wide range of theoretical approaches.
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship in thoracic surgery

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Sufficient contemporary operative clinical experience to practice independently in all aspects of thoracic surgery.
  • Experience of managing emergency thoracic cases.
  • Experience of providing the surgical opinion in Thoracic MDT’s.
  • Experience of VATS Anatomical Lung Resections.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in sub-speciality areas of thoracic surgery. Understanding and provide ability to apply research findings in a clinical/organisational context.

Research

Essential criteria
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research.
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Teaching and training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months

Management and Administration

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management.

Clinical governance and audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience in performing clinical audit.
Desirable criteria
  • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project
