Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Histopathology at the SYB Pathology Royal Hallamshire Hospital site. We are looking to recruit an Advanced Biomedical Scientist main laboratory leader with specific responsibility for service development.
As an integral part of the Histopathology Senior Team, in conjunction with laboratory management you will take the lead on service development, specifically (but not exclusively) have day to day responsibility for the digital pathology section.
The post will primarily be based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield but as you play your part in transformation of the Histopathology service across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, flexibility to visit all sites will be required.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to lead the digital pathology reporting aspect of the service including general oversight, training, progression and UKAS compliance of the section.
Duties include;
- Day to day workflow management
- troubleshooting
- Liaison between laboratory and Histopathology Consultant
- Section leadership
The role is also required to lead on general service development away from digital pathology. Consider ways to innovate and engage the team and service in improvements which benefit service users across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered with the HCPC
- MSc or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (Histopathology) or level 7 Apprenticeship or equivalent extensive experience with a commitment to obtain a level 7 qualification
- IBMS Specialist Diploma (Cellular Pathology) or equivalent
- Evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
- Further management training
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience in a UKAS accredited clinical Histopathology Laboratory.
- Relevant experience of core histopathology techniques
- Experience of a wide range of Histopathology diagnostic techniques
- Experience of implementing Digital Pathology within a Histopathology service
Desirable criteria
- Experience in application and monitoring of UKAS standards.
- Experience of training and assessing staff competencies
- Demonstrable leadership qualities
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Good IT skills (Microsoft office, Q-Pulse, LIMS)
- Evidence of leading a team
- Effective communication skills. written and oral
