Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Safeguarding Midwife to join the Jessop Wing, Safeguarding Team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

We are looking to recruit an inspirational and highly motivated Midwife. The successful candidate will demonstrate Safeguarding knowledge within the remit of Maternity and desirably Neonatal services. A Think Family approach is essential. The post holder will report to and support the Lead Midwife for Safeguarding at Jessop Wing and act as a conduit between staff and external agencies and stakeholders involved in Safeguarding Children and Child Protection.

The Safeguarding Midwife will be a visible and credible individual within the Jessop Wing, sharing specialist knowledge, and advice to staff in the clinical environment.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide care co-ordination for vulnerable mothers and their families
  • To provide safe and effective midwifery care
  • To maintain a high standard of contemporaneous documentation
  • To plan allocate and supervise the work of a team
  • To take charge of the ward regularly if working generically
  • Support the Senior Midwife in ensuring the highest standard and quality of midwifery care is delivered
  • To ensure that local safeguarding procedures are adhered to and specialist plans are in place
  • To support and offer specialist advice to staff caring for vulnerable women and their babies

The Directorate of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology is based at the Jessop Wing which is linked to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The maternity unit has over 6800 births per year and is a Regional Tertiary Maternity Service with a Level 3 Neonatal Unit of 44 cots. A tertiary Gynae-Oncology service and a changing Gynaecology Service, which includes an Assisted Conception Unit, complete the services within the Directorate.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for the maximum period of 12 months. Where there is potential, the secondment/fixed term contract may finish early, or in the first instance, the secondment/fixed term contract may be extended due to the internal/external secondment of the substantive post holder. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts and secondments in relation to the substantive post holder.

Please also note any secondment must first be agreed with your current line manager.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered practising Midwife
  • Maters/Degree/Diploma in midwifery
Desirable criteria
  • Additional training in Safeguarding
  • Additional Training Substance Misuse Training
  • Additional Training in Domestic Abuse

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completed all core competencies
  • Evidence of post basic clinical placement in a variety of settings to gain the relevant experience
  • Evidence of working with women and families with complex health and social needs
Desirable criteria
  • Caring for women with substance misuse issues
  • Caring for women who are homeless, asylum seekers or trafficked illegally into the country

Further Training

Essential criteria
  • Be confident in a range of Clinical skills, Cannulation, administering IV drugs
  • Working knowledge of Safeguarding Adult and Child
  • Antenatal Screening
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership qualification
  • Knowledge of Family Common Assessment Framework (FCAF)
  • Knowledge of Audit C
  • Knowledge of DASH
