Job overview
A Pharmacy assistant is required to support the ward based clinical Pharmacy Services at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate initiative and work to high standards of accuracy and reliability.
Other duties are to provide support in implementing developments within clinical services to meet the needs of the patient. The post holder will also label, dispense and supply medication against hospital prescriptions.
The post will be based at the either the Northern General Hospital or the Royal Hallamshire Hospital but you may be required to work in any of the sites across the Trust when required.
This post could also be based within the STH theatres department working alongside a Multi-disciplinary team, as a Medicines Management Assistant. Theatres are on both STH sites so this post would be cross-site on a rotational basis.
Main duties of the job
- To work with a multi-disciplinary team to provide support in the delivery of a safe, effective and cost efficient ward based, medicines management service.
- To provide support in implementing developments within clinical services to meet the needs of the patient.
- To label, dispense and supply medication against hospital prescriptions.
- To undertake stock top-ups at ward level to maintain supplies of medicines for STH patients.
- To transport stock or named patient medications between Dispensaries or Stores departments and put away securely at ward level.
- To work flexibly between the hours of 8am and 8pm as part of the ward based and operational team in order to provide and maintain a comprehensive pharmaceutical service in line with current departmental policies and procedures.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services
- Skills, labelling, and dispensing module is essential and BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Pharmaceutical Science or demonstrable equivalent qualification or experience and a willingness to work towards achieving NVQ III in Pharmacy Services
- English and Maths GCSE grade 4/C or above.
- Microsoft Office Packages - evidence of short courses or relevant experience
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Public Services
- Counter Assistants Qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience working within a pharmacy environment
- Relevant experience & competence in labelling and dispensing of inpatient medication with instructions, TTOs or FP10s
- Relevant experience in stock control
- Experience of working as part of a team
- Experience of using pharmacy IT systems
- Excellent customer service skills demonstrable from previous experience working within pharmacy
Desirable criteria
- Experience of communicating with patients and other healthcare professionals.
- Experience of other dispensary duties including: • Collection and delivery of drugs to and from ward areas • Ward drug top ups • Emergency trays • Reception duties

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
