Job overview

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative and self motivated individual to join our expanding pharmacy aseptic services/clinical trials team. The team at Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust comprises of approximately 500 pharmacy staff working across five sites and is one of the biggest pharmacy departments in the country.  

Principal Technicians work with the Accountable Pharmacist, Chief Technician, and Specialist Pharmacists to ensure the CIVAS service is delivered efficiently, safely and meets or exceeds are relevant quality standards. 

You will participate in the planning, organisation, provision and maintenance of the clinical trials service and to be part of the flexible working team in line with current departmental policies and procedures for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, current UK and EU legislation.

Principal Technicians act as role models and manage their own team of staff and therefore are expected to demonstrate excellent working knowledge of aseptic services, clinical trials and exhibit exemplary PROUD values. 

As a Principal Technician you must be driven, enthusiastic, flexible and dependable. You are required to have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a wider MDT. Ideal candidates should be able to demonstrate leadership skills within a hospital pharmacy setting, as well as effective organisational and communication skills.

Main duties of the job

 

  • Be responsible for the day to day management of aseptic dispensing services to maximise efficiency and product quality
  • To deliver a quality aseptic dispensing service.
  • To implement developments within aseptic services to meet the needs of the patient, and to work towards the standardisation of aseptic services Trust-wide.
  • To develop, train and motivate staff ensuring they feel valued both for their contribution to the department and as individuals.  
  • Provide highly specialist technical expertise in the preparation of injectable medicines

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ3, BTEC in pharmaceutical science or equivalent level
  • Leeds University Aseptic Preparation of Medicines (APDM) short course, or be willing to undertake
  • Current GPhC Registration
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Aseptic BTEC or PTQA certificate or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Accredited checking technician
  • Management Qualification
  • NIHR GCP Training

Special Skills/Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively complex and sensitive information with members of the public and other health care professionals.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with staff at all levels.
  • Ability to use own initiative to manage a team to prioritise and organise complex daily tasks, adapting where necessary in response to changing demands
  • Ability to work within narrow margins of error
  • Demonstrate the ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail

  • Management training on policies and procedures, equal opportunities, IPR, etc.
  • Correct techniques for moving and handling heavy weights
  • Excellent knowledge of GMP and QAAPS
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical trial/GCP training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of GMP, QAPPS and QA and its application to Aseptic processing
  • Extensive post qualification pharmacy practice experience of working in an aseptic/production environment
  • Proven training experience
  • Significant supervisory/management experience
  • Management training on policies and procedures, equal opportunities, IPR etc
  • Advanced computer skills
  • H&S training, knowledge of handling hazardous chemicals according to local SOP
  • Previous knowledge of pharmacy based computer systems
  • Production of SOPs
  • Correct techniques for moving and handling heavy weights
  • Knowledge of GCP and clinical trials
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding and use of the Chemocare electronic prescribing system
  • Involvement in the preparation of Intrathecal cytotoxics
  • Change management
