An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Laboratory Medicine – Phlebotomy Outpatients Department at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP) Partnership, for two Band 3 SYBP Phlebotomists. We have one permanent full-time position and one 12-months fixed term (maternity cover) position available.
Please note, this role will predominantly involve working 37.5 core hours per week. However, there may be a requirement to spread these hours between 07:30 – 17:30, Monday to Saturday.
Main duties of the job

As an integral part of the Phlebotomy team, you will have a key role in supporting the SYB patients by providing a blood sample collection service predominantly based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The department provides a walk-in service for patients to have their bloods taken by our highly skilled Phlebotomists via venepuncture and also acts a specimen reception for samples to be transferred to the RHH laboratories. The department also provides an outreach community phlebotomy service to housebound patients and also utilises Point of Care Testing devices where appropriate. It is an exciting time to join the SYBP Phlebotomy team as we equip our teams and provide further training opportunities to gain additional skill sets to enhance and facilitate patient care.
The aim of the SYBP Phlebotomy services is to provide parity of phlebotomy duties and responsibilities on all sites where phlebotomy services are under the remit of the laboratory. As such, all members of Phlebotomy staff will be trained to a standard that grants a ‘training passport’ so that they can be deployed on any SYBP site to perform all duties.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of a maximum of twelve months due to maternity leave of the substantive post holder. Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above or some laboratory experience
- Willingness to complete an in-house competency package and additional skills training equivalent to A level/NVQ Level 3 or NVQ level 2 with recognised additional short courses (e.g. Venepuncture training, clinicalskills.net) or extensive experience in Phlebotomy/Venepuncture
- Willingness to undertake training and competency assessment to perform clinical patient observations
Desirable criteria
- Phlebotomy training course/ previous evidence of competence.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy
- Understanding of job content
- Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices
- Experience with a range of laboratory techniques/working with variety of venepuncture equipment or relevant transferrable experience in a clinical environment
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience within the NHS.

- Keyboard and basic IT skills
- Have an awareness of Health & Safety issues

- Evidence of effective time management skills and with a methodical approach

- Commitment to departmental shift patterns (including weekends bank holidays and out of hours) to enable effective service delivery.
- Ability to travel across the SYB region to work at other sites and/or perform patient domiciliary visits
