Job overview

Do you want to make a life-saving difference to people with cancer? Want to work in one of the UK’s leading cancer treatment centres? Would you like to earn a wage while studying for a degree?

Part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Weston Park Cancer Centre is one of the most forward-looking dedicated cancer hospitals in the country with a world-leading reputation as a centre of excellence for cancer care. It provides specialist curative and palliative treatments, including anti-cancer therapy and radiotherapy, for patients across South Yorkshire and beyond. Clinical care and research are integrated into our patient care, and the hospital is credited as a pioneer of modern advances in the field of cancer.

Our Therapeutic Radiographers at Weston Park Cancer Centre deliver life-saving or life-extending treatment to people diagnosed with cancer. While most people train for the role through a university degree, we’re proud to offer a new and exciting route into the role, and a degree, through our Level 6 Apprenticeship in Therapeutic Radiography!

Over the three-year apprenticeship, you’ll train to be a fully-qualified Therapeutic Radiographer, where you’ll gain an in-depth knowledge of the different radiotherapy treatments, machines, and technologies, learn how to use them to treat different cancers, and work alongside a fantastic team of different healthcare staff to deliver the best possible care and support to our patients.

Main duties of the job

Working full-time as a Trainee Radiographer within the radiotherapy department at Weston Park in Sheffield, including practical, on the job training, supervision, and earning a wage (aiming to start Feb 2025 to enable integration into the department and on boarding onto the University course).
At least 20% of the week is protected on the job training or attendance at  Sheffield Hallam University, including support from your lecturers and tutors and a mix of on-site and online learning.

At the end of the three years, if you are successful , you’ll be awarded a BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography, allowing you to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which will allow you to pursue your career in Radiotherapy  and apply for jobs either with us or in other cancer centres.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 3 years and 1 month due to this being an apprenticeship/training programme. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts.

Salary will be in accordance with annex 21 of the AFC Terms and conditions, based on the maximum salary of  AfC Band 5 as follows:
