Main duties of the job

 

To provide a maintenance service to all haemodialysis and reverse osmosis equipment used at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and the wider region as specified by the manufacturer. Some equipment requiring fine adjustment and most calibration.

To work under own initiative and organise complex programs of work as part of a team, but often working alone in isolated environments.

To work in accordance with the departmental ISO 9001 quality system.

To deliver a high-quality rapid response service on patient connected medical devices

Test new and loan medical devices on a regular basis to National and International Standards.

Evaluate devices for compliance with international standards prior to purchase and recommend new device purchases and suitability.

The post holder will investigate and resolve where possible MHRA and manufacturers hazards on equipment that falls within the Trust’s responsibility.

The post holder will investigate any reported incidents that may include a medical device.

Working for our organisation

 

Clinical Engineering Management provides a fully comprehensive, highly specialised medical device maintenance and management service to the Trust.  MDMS strategically plans this highly specialised medical equipment management service at an organisational level. 

Medical equipment types range from basic monitoring equipment to highly complex imaging and therapy equipment such as MRI scanners, lasers, gamma cameras and life support equipment.

The budget of this section is £7.4million of which approximately £3.6million is for the running of the section (90% of medical equipment is maintained ‘in house’) and approximately £3.8million for external maintenance contract management.

MDMS also operates a medical equipment library to support the organisation in the management and provision of a range of essential medical devices including for example infusion pumps, negative pressure wound therapy devices, bladder scanners and devices to manage bariatric patients. The department also provides the trust with Medical Device user training through the Training Co-ordinator.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Vocational degree in clinical technology (engineering) or HNC, HND with experience working with Heamodialysis machines, or extensive work experience to satisfy the requirements of the register of Clinical Technologists.
  • Haemodialysis machine training courses

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate practical renal technology training supported with evidence and experience.
  • Specialist knowledge acquired through in-depth experience of relevant aspects of the subject area
  • Substantial experience working at Senior level within an engineering Renal Department or within a commercial Haemodialysis company
  • Experience of scheduled maintenance programmes and in meeting targets
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within a Quality System
  • Experience of teaching and training

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • A general understanding of equipment management within NHS hospitals
  • To be able to plan workloads
  • Awareness of the principles of a formal Quality System
  • Experience of ‘hands on’ maintenance of medical devices
  • Good fault diagnosis skills
  • Good IT skills
  • Awareness of relevant guidelines and regulations
  • Provide practical training to other technical officers
  • Clean current driving licence
  • The ability to work under pressure and meet targets
  • Good interpersonal skills
