Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

NHS AfC: Band 6

Trosolwg o'r swydd

The Speech and Language Therapy Service in Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent offer assessment and treatment to adult patients who have communication and / or swallowing difficulties in community locations such as the person’s own home.  We offer dysphagia, communication and voice assessment and intervention.  We have strong leadership and an ethos of compassionate management.

Do you want a unique opportunity to make a difference?

We have an exciting role for a Band 6 SLT in North Staffordshire working in an established team in specialist clinical areas of:

-        Huntington’s Disease dysphagia and communication within a neuropsychiatric MDT

-        Mental Health dysphagia and communication within an inpatient setting

-        Adult Learning Disabilities dysphagia and communication within a supportive Community Learning Disability Team

The role is 22.5 hours per week and while this sounds like a complex role in part time hours, the caseloads are small and achievable with flexibility around timetables, and a lot of friendly support around the work.

The role is initially fixed term for 12 months, but this is likely to be possible to extend, should all parties feel that this is agreeable.

·       20% protected time each week for supervisions, CPD, self-directed learning or project work.

·       Strong links with the local university which is soon to offer an undergraduate master degree in SLT.  This includes opportunities to be involved in the course syllabus, lecturing, student placements and interviews.

·       A workplace buddy to help you settle into the role and area.

·       Great clerical support and access to communication and dysphagia assistants.

·       The opportunity to be autonomous in your own clinic diary and flexible working arrangements.

What Staffordshire can offer?

Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent is a large geographic area. There are rural and urban areas, people from a range of socio-economic backgrounds and true multicultural communities. This presents excellent opportunities for CPD, expanding clinical knowledge / skills and varied, stimulating work.

The region is vibrant and undergoing major regeneration in areas such as Stoke on Trent.   During the current economic climate associated with the cost of living, Staffordshire has a lower cost of living and an affordable housing market.  There are excellent transport links to scenic countryside and neighbouring cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham; there are places of historic interest; a lively cultural scene; and great schools for those with families.

With all of this in mind, the West Midlands was recently voted the second best place to live in the UK.
