Job overview
We are delighted to be recruiting a Band 4 Assistant Psychologist for our new Community Mental Health (CMH) Rehabilitation Service based across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. Evidence shows that an intensive community treatment approach achieves positive results in recovery for service users with complex severe and enduring mental illness. The CMH Rehab Team works with people and their families within their local communities, providing specialist assessment, treatment and support to stabilise symptoms and help them gain/regain their skills and confidence to live successfully in the community.
As a developing service, there are exciting plans for additional recruitment and service development. Currently the team:
- supports service users who live at a 24/7 supported residential rehabilitation setting in Shrewsbury.
- supports service users who are receiving care out of area with the overall goal to transfer their care back to the local area.
As well as formal supervision and learning opportunities, this post provides excellent opportunities for exposure, informal learning and support from a range of professionals who cover our service including a Forensic Psychologist, Occupational Therapists, an Occupational Therapy Assistant and Community Psychiatric Nurses. You will have the opportunity to liaise with other Health Professionals across the trust. You will be a valued part of our large and expanding psychology workforce in S, T&W and the wider Trust.
Main duties of the job
- To support and enhance the professional psychological care of service users by assisting qualified practitioners in the delivery and evaluation of cost-effective services that meet Trust and Directorate objectives, national strategic and policy guidelines, commissioner requirements and user and carer needs and expectations.
- To support with providing psychological assessment and psychological interventions under the close supervision of a qualified Practitioner Psychologist and within the overall framework of the service’s policies and procedures.
- To assist in the development, co-ordination and delivery of therapeutic group work.
- To work with service users and staff adopting a caring and compassionate approach in supporting service users in reaching their personal recovery goals.
- To assist in the review of risk and the formulation of person-centred care plans.
- To assist the work of Practitioner Psychologists and other members of the MDT in clinically related administration, conduct of audits, collection of statistics, and development of audit and/or research projects, teaching and project work.
- To support the team and our clients across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, working from a variety of bases including people’s homes. Therefore, the successful applicant will be expected to travel to other NHS sites and community venues as part of their role.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- A First or Upper Second honours degree in psychology OR a lower class with a post-graduate qualification e.g.: Masters degree.
- Eligibility for affiliate status graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualifications in relevant area of Applied Psychology and in Research
- Postgraduate therapeutic training e.g., CBT, DBT, ACT, CFT, Systemic etc.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with individuals with complex mental health difficulties
- Previous experience as an Assistant Psychologist or Allied Health Professional assistant
Desirable criteria
- Experience and knowledge of, or additional training in, working with individuals with a history of complex trauma and/or emotional instability
- Experience of working within NHS Adult Psychology services
- Experience and knowledge of, or additional training in, working with people with substance/alcohol misuse
- Experience and knowledge of, or additional training in, working with people with autism.
Aptitude and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Able to demonstrate situations where effective clinical management skills have been used
- Ability to drive as travel is essential to this role
- Ability to demonstrate resilience and to effectively manage own time
Desirable criteria
- Good verbal and written communication skills
