Job overview

Bank Staff within the NHS are employed staff without set contracted hours. In the Portering team we utilise these staff to pick up shifts that are not able to be covered by our substantive staff on an ad hoc basis. We aim to give as much notice as possible for these shifts, but requests may be made at short notice to cover absences such as sickness.

MPFT Facilities & Estates Portering team are currently recruiting for an enthusiastic, self-motivated and well organised Porter to join our team.

The post holder will provide an efficient and effective portering service, working in a self-motivated and professional manner at all times.

This post is based at the The Redwoods Centre, Shrewsbury SY3 8DS

The role involves being flexible and working shift patterns covering a 7 day week shift pattern (37.5 hours per week, core hours of 08:00 – 17:00)

Main duties of the job

Portering:
 Maintain stock control
 Unload, check and sign for incoming goods against official paperwork
 Deliver, issue and collect orders and supplies to/from wards and departments for example linen 
service, patient meals, diet lists, mail, internal mail, stationery, general stores, disposables and 
consumables, medical supplies, clinical specimens and medical equipment, furniture and equipment
 Deal with enquiries/requests both internally and externally
 Maintain and keep up to date records in relation to duties
 Collect refuse and clinical waste around the site and ensure its safe storage and disposal
 Contribute to the provision of reports and schedules including undertaking general asset register 
counts
 Keep stores and portering work areas/office clean and tidy
 Sort internal mail, Royal Mail delivery and frank outgoing post as required
 Carry out furniture moves within and off site
 Carry out ad hoc cleaning as per work schedule or requested by supervisor
 Set up meeting and seminar rooms as required

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Portering:
 Maintain stock control

consumables, medical supplies, clinical specimens and medical equipment, furniture and equipment
 Deal with enquiries/requests both internally and externally

 Contribute to the provision of reports and schedules including undertaking general asset register

Transport:
 Provide services between departments, wards, premises and sites including the collection and 
delivery of medical supplies and controlled drugs, equipment, medical records, clerical data, mail 
and linen
 If applicable, give transport assistance to patients and visitors to enable them to get around the site 
safely
 Ensure that all vehicles are used in a responsible and secure manner and that daily basic 
maintenance checks are carried out and recorded.
Security:
 Responsible for dealing appropriately with action required whilst carrying a mobile phone in line with 
portering and security duties

 Undertake general security inspections and duties on the Trust premises
Other:
 Support the supervisor on a day to day basis
 Support the induction and training of other employees
 Comment on Porter/Driver policies and procedures
 Comply with Trust policies and procedures
 Direct and guide Porter/Driver/Security staff as required
 Complete own timesheets
 Assist with quality assurance spot checks
 Ensure at the end of each day/week that all required records are up to date, eg water flushing, 
laundry issues, cleaning schedules and forwarded to supervisor as required
 To use ladders for high work as required, eg curtain hanging, vent cleaning
 Respond to tasks that may arise in an emergency and times of staff shortage
 Flexible working within a team
 Take a personal duty of care for all equipment that is used on a day to day basis as part of the role
 Report any misuse of, or faulty equipment to the appropriate person
 The post holder is expected to have a clear understanding and share the Mission, Values 
and Behaviours of the Trust which defines our culture. All staff are required to promote and 
adhere to these.
 Responsible for promoting a positive work culture.
 Responsible for maintaining own core competences and CPD register along with 
supporting department wide training and development needs.
Decisions and judgements:
 The postholder does not have any responsibility for staff
 The postholder will be guided by standard operating procedures and understand NHS standards
 The postholder will work within established procedures/practices with supervision available for 
reference
 The postholder will follow policies in own role and may be required to comment, but has no 
responsibility for service development
 The post holder will be required to assess situations that present themselves and determine an 
appropriate course of action from a choice of options, eg incorrectly posted/addressed mail for 
franking
Communication and relationships:
 Provide information and advice to new starters, apprentices, trainees, work colleagues, managers, 
contractors (in line with the level of role, training and experience)
 The postholder will provide general non-clinical advice, guidance, or ancillary services directly to 
patients, clients, relatives or carers
 Communicate with patients, on a regular basis, some of whom may have communication difficulties
Physical demands of the job:
 Physical effort required for the role will be moderate for several short periods during a shift
Most challenging/difficult parts of the job:
 The postholder will encounter some exposure to hazards during the working shift
 The postholder may occasionally be exposed to emotional or distressing circumstances, eg deaths 
on wards
