Job overview

We are delighted to be advertising this new opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic person with lived experience of perinatal mental health, to join the Parent and Baby Team.  

The role will involved supporting service users through their journey of recovery.  We believe peer support workers are experts by experience and play a valuable role in supporting families with their recovery.  

The appointed individual will need to be innovative, compassionate and motivated.

Main duties of the job

Peer Support is based on the recognition that there is no better person to support the path towards recovery than someone who has walked the same path as that individual.

The PSW will provide formalised peer support and practical assistance to service users in order for them to regain control over their lives and their own unique recovery process.

Peer Support Workers engage with perinatal mental health service users to show empathy, share experience, inspire hope and promote recovery with the aim of assisting service users to gain and maintain independence in the community.

PSW work as part of the specialist community perinatal mental health team and work in collaboration of other key stakeholders involved in the delivery of care in the community.

This role will involve co facilitating wellbeing coffee groups in the local Family Hubs providing support to the local community in regarding to their emotional wellbeing.

Working for our organisation

The Parent and Baby Day Unit offer a day hospital service, community team and the Lotus Maternal Mental Health pathway.

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team, working alongside psychiatrists, nurses, CPN's, psychologists and admin staff.  This is an exciting time for our team as we are currently developing new pathways within the team with the long term plan funding.  

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a safe and non-judgment environment for service users to access for social and emotional support.  This is usually through planned groups such as Umbrella group and relaxation classes.  You will be supported by the multi-disciplinary team to support in the recovery journey.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • English language literacy and numeracy skills to the standard necessary to provide clear understandable records on computer systems.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Personal lived experience of perinatal mental health problems

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to relate to a wide range of people, with excellent interpersonal skills
