An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Doctor in Community Paediatrics at Staffordshire Children's Hospital at Royal Stoke. 

Community Paediatrics

The 7 Consultant Community Paediatricians, 2 career grades and 2 nurse specialists cover the city of Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding north Staffordshire/Moorlands area. The consultants and career grade staff each have an area of specialist interest or responsibility.

The team are responsible for training junior doctors ST3 and above in both core community posts and grid posts.

The Community Team are based in the Child Development Centre which is on the Royal Stoke hospital site adjacent to the children’s centre. Paediatricians work closely with the CCGs and MPFT who provide health Visitors School Nursing and community therapy services, and administer Child Health Surveillance. 

Clinics are provided within special schools, the hospital Children’s Outpatients Department, multi-disciplinary Child Development Centres and health centres.

Community paediatricians undertake educational medicine, including statutory responsibilities under the Education Act, developmental paediatrics, and neuro-disability, including provision of paediatric outreach clinics in special schools, social paediatrics including child protection work, LAC and adoption work, and audiology.

Each Consultant and Associate Specialists, Staff Grades and Specialist Registrars has a specific area of clinical and managerial responsibility. The work of the Community Child Health Service includes:-

 

·       Children with neuro-disabilities and their families

·       Educational medicine

·       Epilepsy

·       School age children

·       Pre-school children

·       Vaccination programme

·       Fostering and Adoption

·       Child Protection

·       Aetiological assessment for children with sensori-neural hearing loss

·       Designated doctor for child death

·       Named doctor for child protection

University Hospitals of North Midlands has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke-on-Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. From these hospitals we provide a full range of general acute hospital services for people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. The Trust also provides specialised services for three million people in a wider area, including neighbouring counties and North Wales.

Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care and paediatric intensive care. We are recognised for our particular expertise in trauma, respiratory conditions, spinal surgery, upper gastro-intestinal surgery, complex orthopaedic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and the management of liver conditions. The Trust has some of the most modern operating theatres in Europe.

The post holder will be fully trained in the assessment of Looked after Children and be able to undertake these assessments independently. There will be opportunity to join the department for peer review sessions in both safeguarding and developmental paediatrics.

Secretarial support is provided by a secretary and support secretary based nearby to the doctors’ shared offices where PC and internet access is provided.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent

  • A post graduate qualification e.g. MRCPCH by examination, MSc, DCH, DCCH, MBA or other relevant diplomas

Clinical Experience

  • Minimum 4 years (or equivalent) postgraduate training, two of which must have been in paediatrics or community paediatrics at ST1/2 level at least
  • 6 months experience within Looked after Children / IHA
  • Ability to assess a normal child and to recognise and appropriately manage abnormality
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of how working in community settings differs from hospital
  • Level 3 Child Protection

  • Experience in other areas relevant to child health e.g. general practice, child mental health, sexual health, obstetrics, public health
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and make decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively e.g. report writing; thesis
