An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Specialty Doctor in Neonatal Medicine for a 2 year period.  The post will provide an excellent chance to further develop your skills in a tertiary NICU. 

The department is 3rd in terms of size and population. We care for babies across the West is one of the 28 national Non -Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Units and is in the upper 3 Midlands and beyond in addition to our local population. We work very closely with the West Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network, and surgical and specialised services across Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool, as well as neighbouring partners in Cheshire. On site is the Staffordshire Children’s Hospital which provides tertiary level paediatric support in areas such as Respiratory and gastroenterology services along with a regional Paediatric Intensive care unit.

Main duties of the job

Main clinical responsibilities of the post holder include: 

  • Lead tier 2 cover for the intensive care, high dependency, special care, transitional care, postnatal wards. Conducting wards rounds with consultant supervision 
  • Holding the emergency tier 2 bleep covering labour suite and theatres for normal deliveries, emergency and elective caesarean sections (including unexpected deliveries in the Emergency Department.
  • Conducting internal transfers of babies i.e. for MRIAttending neonatal clinics with consultants
  • Admission and management of neonates- including supervising tier 1 colleagues
  • Providing advice to junior colleagues and supervising them with regards to management of common postnatal ward problems i.e. jaundice, hypoglycaemia etc.
  • Antenatal counselling for women that present to delivery suite in threatened preterm labour

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • Awards/distinctions whilst studying for 1st degree
  • Academic and extracurricular achievements
  • Additional postgraduate qualification i.e MD

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrated competence to at least ST4 level in all key neonatal areas ie. conducting neonatal clinics with supervision, antenatal counselling, experience of management of ventilated babies- evidenced within portfolio
  • Minimum of 4 years postgraduate experience, of which 2 years are in UK Neonatal Medicine
  • NLS provider
  • Child protection level 3/Child protection portfolio
  • Minimum of 6 months experience of working on a tier 2 rota on a UK NICU
Desirable criteria
  • Up to date RCPCH portfolio or equivalent
  • Competence in common neonatal procedures with skills log within the portfolio or equivalent

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, senior medical staff and other health professionals
