Job overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen within the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust;

We are seeking an Mechanical Technician to carry out effective and high-quality maintenance across the Estate for the benefit of our patients and colleagues. The role is permanent and forms part of the Maintenance Team for the Estates and Facilities Division where you will have the opportunity to support and work with colleagues both internal to the team and externally.

You will be a motivated and self-disciplined professional, who takes pride in their work and will be responsible for working to a schedule of planned and reactive works.

 

You will be based at West Suffolk Hospital but will be required to visit other sites across the West Suffolk area

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for providing technical assistance for mechanical staff and contractors ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures, within the West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as well as other Trust properties as directed by Management.

The ability to work alongside other trades to ensure the high standard of patient care we require is essential.

After appropriate training the post holder may be required to undertake emergency on-call duties and join the Estates Dept roster for On-Call services.

  

All work must be carried out in compliance with the Trusts safety standards and procedures, British Standards and HTM guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job summary:

 

The Estates department are responsible for ensuring the safety and continuity of the Engineering and building infrastructure across all West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust owned sites. The Estates Technician will form a core part of this service delivering specialist engineering knowledge and skills to ensure plant and systems are maintained and operated to the highest possible quality.

 

Job responsibilities:

 

 

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

 

·         To provide technical assistance for mechanical staff and contractors ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.

 

·         To undertake complex fault diagnosis on Mechanical services and fault rectification, maintenance, and M&E installation work across the Trust.

 

·         To undertake special Departmental projects as identified by the Estates Manager, Estates Officers and or Team Leaders.

 

·         Be fully conversant on the Estates Decontamination equipment, for washer disinfectors and sterilisers.  Undertake all aspects of testing, insurance inspections and monitoring of decontamination equipment, pressure vessels and lifting equipment.

 

·         To undertake the duties of an Authorised Person (AP) or Competent Person (CP) for specific engineering disciplines as required to do so by the Estates Managers.

 

·         To deputise for the Team Leaders at times of absence when delegated the authority to do so.

 

·         The post holder will report to the Estates Team Leaders on a daily basis

 

 

1.            Communication:

 

·         To liaise with manufacturers regarding specialist plant or equipment failures and to arrange the supply of specialist goods and services under maintenance contract and/or direct contract.

 

·         At all times to carry Trust communication devices to facilitate immediate response to emergencies.

 

·         Participate in regular team meetings.

 

·         Advise the management chain of any technical issues that may cause potential risk in the immediate or long term future.

 

·         The ability to work as part of a team or take a lead role or act as an individual as required to organise and supervise oneself or others.

Person specification

Education & Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Recognised apprenticeship in a mechanical trade
  • C&G or NVQ Level 3 in an Engineering discipline or equivalent.
  • Evidence of CPD
  • BTEC, ONC/HNC in Mechanical engineering or equivalent experience e.g. time served tradesman.
Desirable criteria
  • Current Competent Person certificate in various technical systems such as medical gas, decontamination, etc.

Experience & Knowledgement

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of working in an engineering and/or building maintenance role
  • Evidence of a maintenance background with skills to carry out minor mechanical/electrical/building repairs
  • Previous experience and knowledge of Database and spreadsheet systems
  • Experience and Knowledge of Microsoft office programmes.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an Acute Hospital environment
  • To have knowledge of: Low Pressure Hot Water Systems, HTM documents including: HTM 00 Healthcare Engineering, HTM 01 Decontamination, HTM 03 Heating and ventilation HTM06 Electrical services

Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Electrical Safety Code for LV systems
  • Knowledge of HTM 06 – Low Voltage systems
  • An understanding of Mechanical heating, ventilation and hot water systems

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Has the ability to travel.
  • Ability to work out of hours, evenings, weekends and bank holidays as needs arises.
  • Participate in the Estates Craftsman on-call rota.
  • Able to undertake all duties as detailed in the job description.
