Job overview
This post offers an exciting opportunity to support our Neurology service. The appointee will work closely with our existing Neurologists, our CNS’s, ward staff and the teams with the Trust and community, to deliver high-quality neurological care.
This is a 12-month fixed-term role.
The day to day work of the successful applicant will be located at the West Suffolk Hospital, supported by our excellent integrated CNS team both within the trust and the community. The post holder will deliver an outpatient and ward referral service. There are no on call duties.

Main duties of the job
- To develop and extend Neurology Services at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.
- Provide advice and day to day management of medical inpatients with neurological disease
- Provision of Neurology outpatient services at the at West Suffolk Hospital and an outreach clinic.
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all in-patients under the care of your team.
- Teaching and training of intermediate, junior staff, nursing staff and medical students
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
- To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

The Neurology department at the West Suffolk Hospital currently comprises four consultants, with a further day of Neurology provided by a Consultant, Dr Ed Needham, one day a week. In addition, three neurology disability nurses (with expertise in Multiple Sclerosis), three Parkinson’s Disease Nurses, and two Epilepsy Specialist nurses and three secretaries.
The Neurology Department also provides a ward consultation service for inpatients with neurological disorders. It is planned to make this service more responsive by providing daily input during the week. This will allow a timely assessment of patients with acute neurological disorders.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- MD or PhD
- Entry on the GMC specialist register in Neurology or be eligible for entry (within six months of attaining Certificate of Completion of Training) at the time of interview and hold a licence to practice.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Experience in management of Neurology in-patient and out-patient medicine
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a full spectrum of Neurology patients
Desirable criteria
- Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR training programme or equivalent
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Neurology
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the neurology service
- Ability to organise and manage a neurology service
- Ability to manage and lead members of the multi-disciplinary team
- Experience of audit management
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following:- - PLAB 1 - PLAB 2
- Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
Desirable criteria
- 5 years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme
Teaching and Training
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervising F1s, F2s and SpRs
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Experience of workplace- based assessment
- Experience in developing and delivering undergraduate teaching
Desirable criteria
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research
- Experience of teaching basic clinic skills to undergraduates
Management and Audit Training
Essential criteria
- Ability to organise and manage day to day service delivery e.g. out-patient priorities
- Ability to manage and lead strategic developments in service delivery
- Experience of audit management
- Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets

Appraisal
Essential criteria
- To have training and experience in appraisal systems
Research and Publications
Essential criteria
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- Publications in peer reviewed journals
Desirable criteria

- To have a broad understanding of all elements of, and a commitment to the principles of Clinical Governance
Standards
Essential criteria
- To have a thorough knowledge and demonstrable understanding of “Good Medical Practice” from the GMC
