Job overview

The Neonatal Unit at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is a Level 1 Unit with 12 cots. We provide short term intensive care, high dependency care and special care for sick and preterm infants from 30 weeks gestation (multiples from 32 weeks). We have facilities to stabilise babies if born before 30 weeks, prior to their transfer to a tertiary unit for ongoing care. We have 1 ITC cot, 3 HD, 8 SC as well as Neonatal Transitional Care and a Neonatal Community Service. Around 500 babies are admitted to our unit every year.

 

We are dedicated to delivering excellent family integrated care, have recently been awarded the GOLD Bliss Baby Charter Accreditation,  and are now working towards Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) stage 2 accreditation.

 

We are a small, supportive and friendly team, looking for a Registered Children's Nurse, General Nurse, or Midwife who is passionate  and can deliver the highest quality care. The successful candidate(s) will need to be committed to working autonomously as well as within a team, have excellent communication skills with an ability to develop solid relationships with women and their families, whilst working alongside neonatal nurses, midwives, medics, as well as the wider multidisciplinary team.

This position is for a Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse but applications will be considered to recruit a Band 5 candidate with relevant experience and qualifications into a B5 staff nurse position should there be no suitable B6 candidates.

 

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work clinically ensuring the provision of safe, effective, high-quality, family integrated care.

 

Working with nursing, medical and midwifery teams in the care of babies and their families, contributing to the effective and efficient day-to-day running of the service.

 

Intensive care of the neonate qualification essential, preferably with post course experience, and the mentorship course, or equivalent.

 

Full training and a comprehensive induction programme will be provided.

 

The post holder is required to have a flexible approach to working hours and duties and cover a roster period to include day or night duties, weekends and public holidays.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Management Responsibility

 

 

  • Continued responsibility for providing professional leadership to the team. Co-ordinate and develop team activities to ensure the delivery of a cost-effective, efficient and quality

neonatal service. To lead in developing and up-holding clinical standards.

 

  • To ensure that optimal use is made of available resources to provide effective cover over a 24-hour period. To ensure the appropriate skill mix at all times within the resources available and taking remedial action when shortfalls occur.

 

  • Participate in regular objective setting and performance review, including the appraisal process. Assist the ward manager in identifying and managing performance issues such as attendance and professional conduct

 

  • Assist in the investigation of complaints through the Trust Complaints procedure, using these as learning opportunity and support the ward manager to change practice as a result, where appropriate.

 

  • Ensure clinical and other untoward incidents are reported through the Trusts incident Reporting mechanism and support staff in this process.

 

  • Work with the ward manager and Practice Development Nurse (PDN) to ensure that the team is trained in skills of problem solving.

 

  • Participate in change management within the team.

 

  • Encourage staff to identify their training needs and work with the ward manager/PDN to address these.
  • Participate in the appointment of new staff including selection and interview, and the

planning and development of orientation and induction programmes

 

  • Be aware of budgetary responsibilities and limitations; ensure resources are used effectively, assisting in managing resources within agreed budget as set by the Directorate.

 

  • Assist in the development of communication systems and maintain existing effective systems within the clinical area.

 

  • Participate in the operational management of personnel issues such as management of

sickness/absence, ensuring the appropriate action is taken, in line with Trust policy.

 

  • Participate in the investigation of complaints, incidents and accidents, reporting preliminary findings to the ward manager as appropriate. Ensuring that good consumer relations are developed and maintained.

 

  • Ensure adequate systems are in place for maintenance and safety of equipment, which includes timely reporting of faults.

 

 

  • Ensure that all Trust policies and guidelines and Health and Safety regulations are adhered to.

 

 

 

  1. Clinical Responsibilities

 

  • Demonstrate clinical skills and expertise to all grades of staff, including junior medical staff. Review and evaluate care given by other team members, ensuring that realistic goals are set to achieve optimal outcome.

 

  • Undertake an extended role to work within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure timely appropriately delivered best practice.

 

  • Facilitate mentorship and preceptorship programmes within the Unit. Act as a role model and clinical leader, demonstrating knowledge/research-based best practice.

 

  • Assist in planning and implementation of induction, preceptorship and mentorship

programmes, monitoring the progress of all the staff.

 

  • Fulfil the role of clinical supervisor, demonstrating and facilitating reflective practice.

 

  • Encourage staff to identify own training needs and work with the ward manager to support staff.

 

  • Identify Child Protection issues, which affect the child’s right as an individual.

 

 

 

  1. Professional Responsibilities

appropriate.  Support and facilitate all staff in keeping up to date with changes in nursing practice, technology, research and health care.

 

  • Maintain a high level of current research awareness and developments in neonatal nursing and area of special interest.

 

  • Plan, co-ordinate and evaluate mentorship, preceptorship programmes. Supervise and facilitate appropriate mentorship of students in the area.

 

  • Assist in the maintenance of accurate statistics.

 

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Valid NMC registration as RN/RSCN/RM
  • ENB 405 (Neonatal course) or equivalent.
  • ENB 997/998 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Degree or evidence of recent Study at Degree Level.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of two years’ recent experience within neonatal intensive care nursing at band 5 or above.

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good organisational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as autonomously.
Desirable criteria
  • Enhanced Neonatal Practice course (or willingness to undertake)

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to and up to date knowledge of issues affecting neonatal nursing.
  • Flexible approach to working hours and duties and adaptable as the role demands.
