Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an Advanced Endoscopy Fellow on a fixed-term contract for 12 months. This fellowship would be suitable for a Gastroenterologist who is reaching the end of their specialist training and wishes to develop a specialist interest in Endoscopy.  The post holder will be part of the wider endoscopy team at Frimley Health NHS Foundation trust consisting of 16 gastroenterologists and 3 clinical endoscopists working across 3 sites and 11 procedure rooms. Opportunities will be available for training in advanced endoscopic techniques. These include, oesophageal RFA (HALO), upper GI EMR, single balloon enteroscopy, capsule endoscopy, colonic EMR and dilatations. Opportunities to learn full thickness resection is also available. The post holder will be a member of the endoscopy training team and opportunities will be available in endoscopy education.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be expected to provide 4 service lists per week as part of endoscopy backfill.  1 of these lists will be an in-patient list.
  • Backfilled lists are allocated in a flexible manner
  • The post holder will have 2 dedicated training lists in advanced endoscopy tailored to the needs to the post holder
  • 2 sessions of Endoscopy referral triage, gastroenterology referral triage
  • 1 audit/teaching session
  • 1 admin session

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee will be expected to be competent in upper GI endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy and in addition to attending designated training lists; they will be expected to undertake service provision lists during the week. 

The exact mix of endoscopy activity will depend on the previous experience and training needs of the appointee. Flexibility in backfilling lists will be expected. There will be the possibility to participate in the GI bleed on-call rota to gain experience of acute GI bleeds. There are no general medical on-call duties and no fixed ward commitments. 

To allow the post holder to become more experienced in advanced endoscopy techniques.  This would suit someone nearing completion of training as an Out of Programme experience (OOPE).  The post holder will be a part of the endoscopy training team and may be required to participate in departmental training sessions.  Currently the department is working towards setting up JAG accredited courses and the post holder will help towards the delivery of this.

  • Full registration with GMC and a licence to practice.

  • JAG accreditation in colonoscopy

  • Demonstration of experience in Gastroenterology/Endoscopy

  • Experience of independent endoscopy working
  • Experience of MDT working

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of endoscopy pathway and guidelines
  • Evidence of good written and verbal communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • Personal participation in audit
