Job overview
Applications are invited for 2 enthusiastic Consultants in Paediatrics at Frimley Park Hospital, with an outstanding reputation and a proud record of achievement. This is an exciting opportunity to build your career and join a team of 15 dedicated Acute Paediatric Consultants; one of the country’s largest and most respected Trusts.
We have a commitment to improve the Health and Care Services for the 900,000 people we see across Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey. We continue to invest in our services and facilities, including an upgrade to the maternity unit as well as opening a brand new £100m state of the art hospital to replace the old Heatherwood site. We are planning to invest further in diagnostics and inpatient capacity at Frimley Park and have recently received approval for a new hospital as part of the New Hospitals programme to be ready by 2030.
Significant investment into Quality Improvement and Digital Programmes has been made and will help to ensure that we achieve our aim of providing the highest quality healthcare to our patients. Our new EPR (Epic) went live in June 2022, we are already beginning to reap the benefits of this investment. Our three core values and the behaviours that support them guide everything we do, setting out expectations for our staff in the way they treat patients, visitors, service users and each other. If you have a passion for clinical excellence, patient care and your own career development you’ll feel at home at Frimley Health.
Main duties of the job
The post is part of a team of 15 Consultants, 14 middle grades and 16 junior doctors.
Responsibilities include a mixture of attending weeks on the Paediatric ward, Paediatric Assessment Unit and Neonatal Unit, with on call 1 in 12 for General Paediatrics and Neonates.
Each week two Consultants attend, one on Paediatrics, one on Neonates. When attending for Paediatrics the Consultant is responsible for the Ward and HDU. When attending Neonates the Consultant is responsible for all on the Neonatal unit, delivery suite, postnatal ward and transitional care.
The post includes a 12-hour Consultant presence on PAU, which also involves answering the GP hot phone to give advice and guidance and accept primary care referrals until 6pm. There is an expectation that the post holder will attend the weekly Paediatric & Neonatal Grand Round when attending.
The post holder will do 8 weeks a year in the attending roles.
When not attending there will be 3 outpatient clinics per week, 2 general clinics including follow ups. Depending on the service needs, the post holder will have an opportunity to develop a specialty interest in keeping with the needs of the department.
On call for out of hours Consultant cover will be 1 in 12, covering both Paediatrics and Neonates; when on call the Consultants are expected to attend night handover. All patients are reviewed by a Consultant within 14 hours of a decision to admit. At weekends the Consultant is present for a minimum of 8 hours each day.
Working for our organisation
It's an exciting time to build your career at Frimley Health, one of the country’s largest and most respected Trusts, made from the merge of Frimley Park with Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals in 2014.
The paediatric ward has 26 cots or beds, with the ability to accept infants, children and teenagers, with 4 beds and 1 cubicle that are high dependency. The ward facilitates elective activity and admissions from ED. We provide day care, ambulatory care and open access for some. Separate areas are designated for children deemed immunosuppressed, children having surgery and those suffering from infectious diseases.
PAU is staffed by nurses and doctors in training with a supervising Consultant. The unit can see up to 30 children daily, referred from primary care or ED.
Local Neonatal Units (LNU) take babies born at 27 weeks gestation and above and care for babies with a range of care needs and conditions. Babies requiring Neonatal Intensive Care are retrieved by dedicated transport teams.
We are committed to providing excellent educational opportunities and deliver virtual learning, weekly afternoon education sessions, weekly X Ray meetings, monthly educational half days, monthly Morbidity and Mortality meetings, monthly Safeguarding meetings and monthly Perinatal meetings.
