Job overview
As the Lead Emergency Care Nurse, you will be responsible for the daily operational management and service delivery process within the Resuscitation room along with the line management of a nursing team.
Successful applicants will predominantly work in the resuscitation department however will be expected to rotate into other areas of the ED to maintain a breadth of skills and expertise.
The post holder will provide leadership in the Resuscitation room undertaking the role of the Resuscitation room lead. This will provide specialist emergency nursing advice to co-workers and juniors working throughout the department. The role is to work primarily, but not exclusively, in the resuscitation area
Main duties of the job
To demonstrate specialist emergency care and major trauma expertise underpinned by theory and incorporating evidence-based practice, evidenced by completion of appropriate competencies.
To provide leadership for the multidisciplinary team in the resuscitation area to ensure a high standard of patient care, providing support and supervision as required.
The role includes working closely and effectively with the multi-disciplinary team in the management of the Emergency Department Resuscitation room. This includes the support and leadership provided to nursing and support staff within the Emergency Department and across the Emergency Floor. The role also includes the continuing responsibility for the effective delivery of the philosophy, policies, and standards of care and morale of the department in line with the Trust values: Patients first, Passion for excellence, Personal responsibility and Pride in our team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/OUTCOMES:
Clinical
1. To demonstrate specialist emergency care and major trauma expertise underpinned by theory and incorporating evidence-based practice, evidenced by completion of appropriate competencies
2. To take responsibility of the accurate assimilation, interpretation and reporting of clinical data in relation to emergency care patients and take appropriate action
3. To review and modify planned interventions in response to the needs of emergency care patients acting independently where appropriate and seeking advice where required
4. To order appropriate diagnostic investigations, such as x-rays and laboratory tests, to assist in managing episodes of care
5. To provide leadership for the multidisciplinary team in the resuscitation area to ensure a high standard of patient care, providing support and supervision as required
6. To act as a role model of expert clinical practice.
7. To ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard. Be a competent user of and participate in the ongoing development of the Electronic Patient Record.
8. To work in close liaison with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
9. To participate in quality and audit initiatives within the department.
10. To use clinical expertise and skills to accurately assess patient’s individual needs managing clinical priorities appropriately.
11. To co-ordinate, delegate and supervise the management and planning of nursing care within the department when undertaking clinical shifts; deploying staff across the emergency floor considering operational and patient need, acuity and dependency.
12. Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for patients, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning. Coordinate the reporting of all such incidents for the area in liaison with the Matron and Service Manager
13. To ensure that all patients who use the emergency department service do so in a timely manner ensuring equality, privacy and dignity needs are met. Communicate proactively with the patients and their relatives.
14. To challenge practice so that the best and most appropriate treatment is given to the patient; maintaining and monitoring high standards of care, recognising and responding proactively to patients’ changing clinical needs.
15. Ensure a visible presence in clinical areas of responsibility regularly, to ensure accessibility and visibility for staff and patients
16. To act within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct.
17. To practice safe prescribing of medicines where appropriate and as per agreed scope of practice, and act in accordance with the hospital non-medical prescribing policy
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NMC
- • Relevant post registration clinically specialty qualification (ie ICU or ED nursing course or equivalent)
- • ALS.
- • Holds registered mentor or teaching/ education qualification
- • Degree or working towards degree level or evidence of equivalent health care related study.
- • Child/Adult protection certificate.
Desirable criteria
- • Working towards Masters level study
- • TNCC / ATNC and instructor status or equivalent level 2 trauma
- • APLS
- • MIMM’s - Major Incident Medical Management
Experience
Essential criteria
- • A minimum of 4 years post registration emergency nursing experience.
- • A minimum of 18 months working as Band 6 level in an emergency care setting.
- • Leadership and management experience.
- • Proven and current experience in the Emergency Medicine setting.
Desirable criteria
- • Experience of working with an electronic patient record and other basic IT systems.
- • Clinical supervision experience. Experience of innovative & flexible working practices.
Skills
Essential criteria
- • Clinical competence in IV drug administration. • Venepuncture & Cannulation.
- • IT skills e.g., word, excel, outlook and hospital database experience.
- • Ability to plan and prioritise own and others workload when under pressure.
- • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- • Ability to demonstrate initiative and self-motivation. & ability to empower.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Sound knowledge of the principles & practice of emergency care.
