Job overview

The Urology Consultant team at Ashford & St Peter’s is currently made up of eight whole time equivalent (WTE) Consultants and this post will be for the eighth WTE post.

The role will provide Prostate diagnostic capacity, will be involved in developing stone treatment pathways and services and also support two other Urology Consultants in providing an emergency ureteric and bladder reconstruction service – thus being part of a dedicated
three person Urological team to provide Urological planning and support to our Centre for
Endometriosis and Minimally Invasive Gynaecology (CEMIG) team and Colorectal team.
The department covers:
 Urological Oncology and intravesical chemotherapy.
 Prostate cancer diagnostics and oncological management.
 Non muscle invasive bladder cancer management.
 Priority Access Clinics, Haematuria clinics, Rapid Access Prostate clinics and Erectile
Dysfunction clinics.
 Urodynamics and Urogynaecology.
 Laparoscopic renal surgery incl. radical nephrectomy and pyeloplasty.
 Modern treatment of urinary tract calculi incl. lithotripsy/percutaneous renal surgery/
ureteroscopy / Extra-corporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL).
 Flexible cystoscopy and Catheter clinic with facility for outpatient urethral dilations

Main duties of the job

Deliver Clinical, Educational, Managerial Services of the highest professional standard at
Consultant Level to the Department
 Work with existing consultants and the multi-disciplinary team to provide a high quality
well-led service for patients of Ashford & St Peter’s, including the diagnosis,
investigations, treatment and management of patients, in accordance with Trust policies
and practices.
 Deliver Direct Clinical Care to patients, through all parts of the Department assisting
clinical decision-making and sharing equally in the workload.
 The Consultant team will provide comprehensive senior clinical cover to the Department.
 To provide clinical care for patients undergoing Urology outpatient appointments,
diagnostics, surgery and other related activities to ensure a high standard of service
and education.
 To contribute to the development, compliance and professional requirements and the
Trust priorities and policies.
 To actively participate in the supervision and training of a multidisciplinary work force in
the Surgery/Urology Department.
 Assessment of patients.
 Provide consultant cover in ward rounds, multi-disciplinary team meetings, clinics,
theatre time.
on request from consultant colleagues in other specialties.
 Engage with medical, nursing, management and all relevant co-workers in the delivery of
department objectives: to provide clinical leadership, improve the patient experience;
ensure the highest quality clinical care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will hold a 10 Programmed Activity Contract with 1 in 9 on calls
On-call commitments are arranged in weekly blocks once every eight weeks. During this period,
the on-call Consultant is responsible for all emergency admissions. The on-call comprises a daily
ward round with full availability to deal with problems from 8:00am to 5:00pm from Monday to
Thursday.
Evening periods are supported by middle-grade staff from 5:00pm to 11:00pm. Although there is
no elective activity conducted during this period two emergency clinics are carried out by the oncall
consultant, on a Wed AM and Thurs AM, for urgent cases. The subsequent weekend on call
(Friday to Sunday) is completed by a formal hand-over on Monday morning with a mandatory 24-
hour rest period (no clinical activity is expected on that day).
The successful post holder will deliver and develop the prostate cancer diagnostic pathway and
support general urology services including stone services. They will also help set up and deliver
multidisciplinary working with CEMIG and the colorectal teams for patients needing operative
involvement for ureteric reconstruction.
