Nursery Nurse

It is an exciting time to be joining Ashford and St Peters NHS Trust.  We are are looking for an inspirational and energetic nursery nurse to work as part of our multidisciplinary team to provide care for newborn infants and assist parents. You would be working alongside midwives, nurses, maternity support workers and doctors. 

As a nursery nurse you would be expected to provide a high standard of care to neonates and their families. This will include assisting mothers with feeding and nurturing advice and support, providing direct clinical care to the newborn and helping to support parents to develop their skills and confidence.

The role covers a 24 hour service and the post holder will be expected to participate in night duties and weekend working. 

ASPH are proud to have a level 3 Neonatal Unit and our experience varies from supporting uncomplicated pregnancies to developing care plans for our high risk maternal and fetal medicine service.  Our multidisciplinary NICU and maternity team provides the best outcomes for babies that require their specialist care.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

The post holder will be expected to have an awareness of the cultural, physical and emotional needs when assisting parents/carers in caring for their newborn baby. This will include having knowledge of safeguarding and liaising with the safeguarding teams when required.

Supporting the 'Baby Friendly Initiative' and providing nurturing and feeding support and advice. This includes creating individualised feeding plans within the infant feeding pathways ensuring the parents preferences regarding their choice of feeding is respected.

Clinical skills will include: undertaking observations for babies as per local protocol; taking blood samples by heel prick for routine blood spot screening and for monitoring blood sugar levels; weighing babies as per local protocol; participating in the care of babies requiring phototherapy including heel prick samples to test serum bilirubin. These skills will be done in partnership with the midwifery and neonatal teams. 

Ensure all record keeping is recorded accurately and promptly within the clinical care record as well as recording results on gestational plotting charts.

To provide direct clinical care to the newborn alongside the wider members of the multidisciplinary team. 

Be able to recognise and jaundice and participate in the care of babies requiring treatment of phototherapy.  

Play a key role within the ‘Well baby clinic’ supporting babies who require readmission.

Have a sound knowledge of the “Baby Friendly Initiative” and be able to support families feed and nurture their babies responsively. 

Attend the morning board round with the Neonatal SHO and Joan Booker midwife in charge to identify those babies that require neonatal reviews and to determine care plans for vulnerable babies.
