Job overview
Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals Ophthalmology Department is looking for a part-time Clinical Optometrist. This post is to support the Paediatric Ophthalmology service.
Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals (ASPH) is the largest provider of acute hospital services to Surrey residents, serving a population of over 410,000 people living in the boroughs of Runnymede, Spelthorne, Woking and parts of Elmbridge, Hounslow, Surrey Heath and beyond. The Trust’s main two sites are Ashford Hospital and St. Peter’s Hospital. Day case surgery takes place in dedicated theatres at Ashford Hospital with Paediatric and other selected surgeries at St Peter’s Hospital. We are a forward looking department with a team of 19 medical staff including 2 with an interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility.
We have the benefit of state of the art ophthalmic imaging systems including, OCT and FFA imaging and a digital surveillance centre at Ashford Hospital, which has allowed us to transform our pathways. We have an excellent multidisciplinary team who work closely together to meet service and client requirements and are continually looking for opportunities to deliver better treatments in innovative ways.
Main duties of the job
The primary role will be to support the refraction service for Paediatric patients. This will be an important contribution towards maintaining the eye health and vision development, in our most vulnerable and young patients.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered with the General Optical Council (GOC)
Desirable criteria
- Further post-graduate optometry qualification relating to a highly specialist aspect of clinical optometry
- Independent Prescriber
- Previous clinical ophthalmology experience e.g. glaucoma screening
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience in Optometry
- Good planning skills and the ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to actively participate in departmental clinical educations and teaching and practical optometry skills
- Good knowledge of slit lamp examination techniques, including use of the 90D fundoscopy lens
Desirable criteria
- Experience working with children, including children with learning disabilities, visual impairment and special needs
- Experience in working in extended optometry roles and shared care clinics

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
