Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Our Children and Young People’s Department has an excellent reputation for providing high quality general and specialist Paediatric and Neonatal services. We are also recognised for our Educational Programme and friendly, supportive working environment. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic consultant to complement our existing team.

We provide a full range of in and out-patient Paediatric services, Paediatric Accident and Emergency and Neonatal Intensive Care (Level 3).

We aim to provide a high quality, multi-disciplinary service to our children and young people based on the latest evidence based clinical guidance. We are continuously improving and updating our skills, developing links with tertiary centres as we evolve services offered and strive to cultivate a culture of learning, support and continuous improvement.

We aim to provide a robust programme of under and post graduate education in order to facilitate this and evolve our staff.

We provide consultant delivered service between the hours of 09.00 - 22.00 Monday to Sunday. We take an active role in all aspects of high quality patient care, from the day to day running of the department, supervision of juniors, nursing staff and Allied Health Professionals to ensure all clinical and performance standards are met.

In order to achieve high standards of clinical care and patient and staff experience we have a well established Clinical Governance structure, incorporating Mortality and Morbidity, Safeguarding Peer Review and SIRI / Complaints meetings. With our achievements shared in our monthly Good News Friday meeting and our local pride in the team award. Issues of concern and good practice are discussed at Divisional Governance Meetings.

We are currently reviewing our acute care pathway; developing our Paediatric Assessment Unit facility to improve the quality of care we are able to provide our patients, whilst improving the work experience of both our substantive medical staff and paediatric trainees.

The department is proud of effective multi-disciplinary team working between medical, nursing, management and support staff. A Clinical Office team provide secretarial support to the medical staff within the specialty.

The General Paediatric Department has a three Tier Medical Rota consisting of a Tier 1 SHO rota, Tier 2 Middle Grade rota alongside the Tier 3 Consultant Rota.

As we have a dedicated Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit we have a separate Neonatal Team at Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 level and therefore there is no requirement to cross cover the Neonatal Unit, although we work closely together.
