We are excited to advertise a brand new position of Head of Nursing, based within our Division of Specialist Surgery & MSK and forming part of the nursing leadership within the new Surrey Surgical Centre at Ashford Hospital.
We are looking for an effective leader with proven delivery experience in a fast paced environment who will approach this interesting and varied role with energy and enthusiasm.
The post holder will be the senior nurse in SS-MSK who will be responsible supporting the Divisional Chief Nurse in providing both expert leadership and clinical care across our two hospital sites. The division includes MSK, Ophthalmology, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Breast Surgery and ENT teams whilst also leading on the delivery of the new Surrey Surgical Centre.
The post holder will ensure that all care delivered within these services adheres to the CQC essential standards, adheres to legislation, follows the organisation’s policies and procedures and is monitored to ensure reliability and delivery to a consistently high standard.
The post holder will provide professional leadership, support and development to Matrons, Advance Clinical Practitioners, Ward Managers and Specialist Nurses; lead on development of nursing/clinical practice across the surgical care pathway, with a particular emphasis on patient safety and the quality of care they receive. The post-holder will act as deputy for the DCN as appropriate.

Main duties of the job
To Support the DCN for leading developments within the Division that will improve patient safety, the patient experience and delivery of the quality agenda.
• Responsible for ensuring effective nursing input into the Surgical Wards on an operational day to day basis.
• Responsible for the direct line management of defined Specialist Nurses.
• Ensure that the principles of patient safety, clinical effectiveness and cost effectiveness are reflected in all standards and practices across the Division.
• Act as a senior nurse giving advice, guidance and supervision to junior doctors and nursing staff in their own development to continually enhance service delivery.
• To support on local development and implementation of guidelines and policies.
• Ensure visibility of the role in the clinical areas through patient safety walk rounds and engagement with frontline staff reviewing quality indicators / performance.
• To provide the DCN with reliable and expert advice and practical support as a member of the senior leadership team.
• Work collaboratively with the ADO, Specialty Leads, Consultants, Operational leads and General Managers to lead an effective and efficient service.
• Ensure SS-MSK services are delivered within the agreed quality, performance and financial parameters agreed by Trust Board.
• Co-ordinate and manage service developments on behalf of the SS-MSK division in association with other senior managers ensuring effective networking and partnership building.

- Significant clinical experience working at a 8A in an surgical/theatre and/or acute setting
- A track record of continuous managerial, educational and professional development
- Evidence of managing complex resource issues (human and financial)
- Evidence of implementation of a range of quality and clinical governance initiatives to develop practice
- Experience of patient involvement and improving patient experience
- Experience of complaints management and resolution
- Evidence of working effectively with clinicians and the MDT
- Experience of Managing conflict
Management
Essential criteria
- Ward and unit management experience
- Proven ability to manage complex and changing workload which includes the ability to identify and resolve conflicting priorities within tight timeframes
