The role of a Maternity Support Worker is key in helping midwives and doctors offer a safe quality service for our mothers/ Birthing People and their newborn babies in the Community Midwifery Setting. You will need to be able to take instructions and cope with the unpredictability of the community midwifery workload.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

  • Accurately weigh the baby, record and report all findings to the community midwife for further action.
  • Support women with infant feeding under the guidance of the midwife and according to agreed BFI guidelines
  • Assisting the midwife within the community midwifery setting 
  • Undertake urinalysis, blood pressure readings, temperature and pulse recordings and record accurately in the electronic Badgernet record.
  • Undertake newborn observations and record accurately on Badgernet.
  •  Once appropriate training has been completed, perform phlebotomy duties and accurately label bottles and complete forms effectively.
  • Once appropriate training has been completed, perform newborn blood spots at day 5 and complete the card correctly
  • Once appropriate training has been completed, perform Serum Bilirubin level by bilirubinometer or heel prick test.
  • Accurately weigh the baby, record and report all findings to the community midwife.

Assisting the mother:

  • Provide guidance and support on the general care of mother and baby –emphasising the principles good hygiene and safety.
  • Assist the mother with the care of her baby, demonstrating nappy changing and bathing as necessary.
  • Support women with infant feeding under the guidance of the midwife and in relation to agreed guidelines.
  • Be aware of the principles of health promotion

  • Accurately weigh the baby, record and report all findings to the midwife in charge of the case to enable the midwife to calculate any weight loss and further need for intervention/admission.

 

  • Check and clean clinical equipment. Report any damaged or broken for repair.

 

  • With the support of the midwife recognise deviations from the normal and report back findings to the midwife

 

  • Provide guidance and support on the general care of mother and baby –emphasising the principles good hygiene and safety

 

  • Support women with infant feeding under the guidance of the midwife and according to agreed BFI guidelines

 

  • Provide social and emotional support to vulnerable women.

           Assisting the midwife within the community midwifery setting and work closely with the midwife.

       Recognise deviations from the normal by following a set criterion.

  • Undertake urinalysis, blood pressure readings, temperature and pulse recordings and record accurately in the electronic Badgernet record.
  • Undertake newborn observations and record accurately in the hospital notes
  •      Once appropriate training has been completed, perform phlebotomy duties and accurately label bottles and complete forms effectively.

  • Help the midwife preparing for and carrying out duties within the maternity unit.
  • Help the midwife setting up and maintaining up photo therapy treatment for babies
  • Promoting Infant feeding.
  • Accurately weigh the baby, record and report all findings to the midwife in charge.
  • Ensure ward areas are checked, clean and clinical equipment available to use instructed by the midwife.
  • Work under the direction of the midwife. Recognise deviations from the normal and report back findings to the midwife

 

Assisting the mother:

 

  • Welcome the mother and her partner to an antenatal/postnatal ward area.
  • Provide guidance and support on the general care of mother and baby –emphasising the principles good hygiene and safety.
  • Assist the mother with the care of her baby, demonstrating nappy changing and bathing as necessary.
  • Support women with infant feeding under the guidance of the midwife and in relation to agreed guidelines.
  • Provide social and emotional support to vulnerable women as directed by the midwife.
  • Be aware of the principles of health promotion
