Principal Haematology Pharmacist (12 month fixed term)

Job overview

We are looking for an experienced hospital pharmacist, specialising in adult haematology to cover this fixed term maternity leave post.

Providing pharmacy leadership to adult haematology across Frimley Health (both Wexham & Frimley), as well as the day to day management at the Frimley Park Hospital site; you and your team will be expected to provide clinical haematology services and work closely with the aseptic team, based at Wexham Park Hospital.

You will be expected to contribute to the strategic development of the department, both within the Trust and within the wider ICS.

Main duties of the job

  • To develop the clinical pharmacy service to adult haematology across the Trust.
  • To manage the day-to-day pharmacy  haematology service to the chemotherapy day unit and ward G1 at Frimley Park Hospital
  • To act as a role model in the field of  haematology within pharmacy practice and provide a consistently high standard of service in line with the pharmacy objectives.
  • To recruit, manage and develop staff under the post holder.

The pharmacy chemotherapy and aseptics department is a forward-thinking department that has  expanded over the past few years with exciting funded posts covering a SACT transformation team, an E&T aseptics technician and pharmacists leading prescribing clinics in both oncology and haematology.  We plan to build a new aseptic unit later this year.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support the Preparative Services Pharmacy Manager with the day to day running of the pharmacy cancer services  to haematology at the Frimley Park Hospital site.

To support the management, planning and delivery of pharmacy services to haematology at Frimley Health.

To promote and develop the use of independent prescribing by pharmacists in the delivery of care to haematology patients across the Trust.

To liaise closely with the Preparative Services Pharmacy Manager to ensure appropriate actions are taken to comply with Patient Safety Alerts, National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), or successor organisations, guidance and Care Quality Commission (CQC) assessments.

To work with clinicians and nurses to develop, implement and monitor the use of protocols and guidelines within haematology.

To help with pharmacy Cost Improvement Programmes by actioning  generic/biosimilar switches where appropriate.

  • Able to work at weekends and to participate in Bank Holiday working

  • Ability to be able to travel between sites

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered with GPhC
  • Postgraduate clinical diploma or equivalent
  • Registered Independent Prescriber
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
  • Pharmacy degree (master’s level, 4 years)
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Formal leadership and management qualification
  • Member of Royal Pharmaceutical Society

Professional/ Functional Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-qualification experience working as a pharmacist in a clinical environment
  • Demonstrable haematology/oncology experience
  • Ability to step up to the role of the lead chemotherapy pharmacist where necessary
  • Understanding of risk management issues
  • Protocol and guideline development
  • Broad experience in hospital clinical pharmacy
  • Practical experience of audit
  • Experience of training others
  • Ability to recognise areas for development of current practice
  • Management of staff including recruitment, appraisal
Desirable criteria
  • Service development.
  • Critical evaluation skills
  • Directorate pharmacist experience
  • Previous experience of clinical pharmacy to general medical/ medical specialties
  • Experience overseeing the operational aspects of an aseptic unit
  • Knowledge and demonstrable application of quality assurance issues relating to aseptic services

  • Member of UKCPA and/or BOPA
