The role is a new but critical link for internal and external clients to help develop the department of EME/Clinical Engineering to the next level of specific 'infusion systems' asset maintenance.
Within this new role is a Band 6 new role cross site with a base at Frimley Park Hospital to assist and supervise in the service and maintenance of Infusion systems across sites from Infusion/Syringe/End of Life, PCA, Epidural, TCI, and other devices such as feeding pumps. Part of this new setup will be the supervision of a team of x2 Band 5 and x2 Apprenticeship roles across the sites.
The overall concept is to draw this in-house and have a dedicated professional team to support PPM and Repairs of the 3500 devices cross sites.
Main duties of the job
The role is to provide the provision of a new service within EME/Clinical Engineering that will align infusion systems maintenance and meet new department strategic objectives.
- The role will allow the work as an essential link between the main EME/Clinical Engineering section on all sites with the ability to be direct and support a team of technical staff and apprentices along with identification and implementation of local infusion systems initiatives.
- The role will ensure that all infusion systems cross-site are maintained to the manufacturer's specific guidance but overall Corrective and Preventative Maintenance program of works are dealt with and actions ensuring safety and compliance throughout the whole trust.
- The post holder will act as the main contact between the Trust internal and external stakeholders. They will combine all of the above to further develop and improve the EME/Clinical Engineering Department for ultimate lifetime management asset lifetime management with traceability as required by the various health regulatory bodies and manufacturers.
- The Post Holder will form part of a multi-disciplined team whose role is to provide the best possible service to the Trust ensuring their contribution is beneficial to other departments within the Trust, as well as the Medical Electronics, to fulfil the Trust’s overall objectives

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To supervise a team of engineers and their apprentices, to include allocation of work, training, recruitment, induction, appraisals etc.
- To deal with all medical device repairs related to infusion systems and (keeping information real time for a concise and traceable process).
- They will work in accordance with the current roster e g based 1-week FPH, 1 week WPH and 1 day HW or as per demand per site providing, ‘bench support ‘,supporting immediate teams and demands.
- To be accountable for the spare parts and hold a singular budget for the section of £50,000.00 non pay.
- To review options to open a Central Infusion workshop within Heather wood Hospital Eme Workshop.
- To act as primary point of contact for infusion related medical device repairs with responsibility for ensuring that the actions and requirements relating to these repairs and to make difficult decisions to support safe and effective patient care.
- Guide and support immediate staff and further identify faults, carry out repairs and planned maintenance as part of the maintenance PPM program as necessary.
- To complete and present monthly reports through 1-1’s to the department management and provide repair and preventative maintenance feedback with KPi reports of compliance to the Medical Device Management Group.
- To carry out regular safety assessment audits of compliance for testing of equipment with Data input/manipulation is to a high degree of accuracy both monthly to internal management and quarterly to the medical device management group
- Act as liaison between the infusion systems team and other critical in-house sections.
- To be responsible for asset alignment ensuing continuity of assets
- To be able to guide and align work of infusion integration and Epic/EPR.
- To be the principal resource/link for clinical and managerial staff and provide specialist advice on the safe use of infusion devices, contributing to a high quality, evidence-based service.
- To create action plans and be able to prioritise and risk rate and then organise workloads that are very technically challenging such as the complex preventative maintenance programs.
- To communicate to the medical device group / committee all updates of completion and plans to achieve a high level of compliance.
- To be an active member of the Medical Device Group in the Trust and produce complex reports of progress and issues.
- To be responsible for supervising a team of Infusion Engineers.
- To be able to create test quality documents, develop new policies, sop’s, and maintain accurate, up to date and concise information guiding the trust and local staff.
- Provide expert advice to clinical staff and other relevant staff groups in the context of infusion systems priority recalls for safety and validation.
- Provide professional and expert advice to colleagues in resolving operational and medical device infusion management issues.
- To act as appropriate infusion systems, lead in the development and implementation of medical device safety related policies, Sop’s, guidelines, and protocols.
- Provide advice towards medical devices strategy development and implementation.
- Ensure the Trust is compliant with any infusion-based standards.
- Works with colleagues to understand the root cause analysis of the issues and report accordingly within the desired course of action.
- Has the ability to work with other staff within the trust and Eme to alleviate any concerns with regards to medical devices.
- Responsible for budget control and validation.
- Assisting in obtaining best value for the hospital by sourcing spares and accessories from the most competitive suppliers in line with procurement guidance.

Essential criteria
- Bsc Biomedical Engineering
- In depth knowledge of modern medical devices, systems and standard, particularly with respect to testing and evaluation
- Some knowledge of modern computer-based systems and some IT knowledge/awareness
Desirable criteria
- Specific studies / qualifications in Medical Instrumentation both generic and specific equipment courses including relevant study/ knowledge of physiology and aspects of medicine
- Degree/HND/HNC or equivalent in Electronics, Physics or Qualifications in Physics and Maths to A level or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Professionally gained experience in several different areas of electronics, preferably including medical electronics e.g. infusion devices, ventilators, incubators, ultrasound machine, etc. for at least three years
- Extensive experience of troubleshooting to board level on a wide variety of electronic and computer-based systems
- Extensive experience of electrical testing using varied range of test
- Supervisory experience in a workshop environment
- Proven level of responsibility where mistakes directly impinge on the safety/well-being of others
Desirable criteria
- Specific servicing experience in medical equipment in NHS or commercial environment
